I cradled my drink as Cam sauntered back to the pool tables. My mind wasn’t made up on the whole visiting them thing yet. Maybe I would. Maybe I wouldn’t.

“Want another rum and coke?”

My lips curled up at the sound of Nick’s rich, deep voice. We’d been chatting on and off since I plopped my butt down on the stool, and he had seemed happy that I was there.

Total bonus points lottery with this guy.

“I’m good, but thanks.” The last thing I wanted to be was drunk. I smiled at him, pleased when his heavily hooded gaze dipped again. “Are you guys usually this busy on the weekend?”

I could see that small talk was something Nick excelled at, which made sense, considering his occupation. He was an equal opportunity charmer. Women flocked to him at the bar. The other bartender, the girl with the pink glasses, seemed to take it all in stride.

“Not sure if you really call this busy, but Saturdays usually bring a larger crowd.” He glanced down the bar before continuing. “So you went to school with them?” he asked, jerking his chin in the direction Cam had roamed off to.

“Yeah.” Leaning forward, I placed my elbows on the bar. “I had no idea they had connections here. Total surprise.”

“Small world,” he said, echoing my earlier thought. “But you’re not very close with them.”

It was a statement, not a question. “What makes you think that?”

“Well, if you were, I guess you’d be over there with them. Or …”

Nick was observant. “Or what?”

One side of his lips curled up as he folded his arms across his chest. The movement drew my attention. I was such a visual creature. Not that anyone would blame me right now. The black shirt he wore stretched around well-defined biceps. “Or you’d rather spend the time with me.”

The twisty motion in my belly cranked up a notch. “Am I that transparent?”

“In the best possible way.” He picked up a bottle. “I’m glad you did stop by. Every time the door opened last night, I looked up and hoped it was you.”

“Is that so?”

“I speak the truth.” His smile was lazy. “Did you finish unpacking?”

“Yep.”

“Were there any more rat bastard combinations?”

I laughed. “There were a few more.”

“Kind of mad I missed out on them.”

“There’s always later.” I toyed with my glass as I met and held his stare. “So, Nick, do you have a last name?”

“Blanco,” he replied after a brief hesitation. “Do you?”

“Keith.” I grinned as he unfolded those arms. “I have another question for you.”

Moving in, he placed his hands on the bar. “Ask away.”

“Do you have a girlfriend?” My breath caught a little when he leaned in suddenly. Our mouths were close enough that we were breathing the same tiny patch of oxygen. “Or a boyfriend?”

Nick didn’t bat an eyelash. “Nope to both. How about you?”

Bonus points explosion!

“None,” I said, welcoming the tingle that swirled down my spine as his breath warmed my lips.
He tilted his head to the side, lining up his mouth with mine with just a fraction of an inch between us. I started to feel a little flushed. “You have plans tonight, Stephanie Keith?” he asked, voice deeper and rougher.

I shook my head as my pulse tripped all over itself in a happy little dance.

Nick’s grin spread into the kind of smile I knew left a trail of women in its wake. “You do now.”

REVIEW: The Finn Factor by Rachel Bailey

The Finn Factor

Genres: New Adult, Romance, Contemporary

View/Purchase: Goodreads, Amazon, B&N

A new adult romance from Entangled's Embrace imprint...

Sometimes all a girl needs is a little practice...
It's been twelve months, three days, and eleven hours since accounting student Scarlett Logan made it past a second date. A pitcher of mojitos in hand, she employs her supreme graphing skills to narrow things down to one horrifying explanation. Kissing. Clearly someone needs to teach her how to kiss properly. Like, say, her best friend and roomie, Finn Mackenzie. He's safe, he's convenient, and yeah, maybe just a little gorgeous.

Finn knows exactly why Scarlett's boyfriends are disappearing quickly. Him. Not a single guy she's brought home is nearly good enough. And he'll be damned if he lets some loser give her "kissing lessons." No. He'll do the honors, thank you very much. The moment their lips touch, though, everything turns upside down. But Scarlett deserves the one thing Finn can't give her. And if he doesn't put an end to the sexy little shenanigans, he'll teach Scarlett the hardest lesson of all...heartbreak.(Synopsis taken from Goodreads)

My Review:

It has been a while since I’ve read any of Rachel Bailey’s works, The Summer of Jake was one of my favorites and now The Finn Factor has been added to that list.

From the very beginning we meet Scarlett Logan, a college student who has been having trouble in the dating department. She can’t figure out what is wrong with her, if there is something wrong, keeping her dates after going out once. Every single guy that has asked her out has never called back for a second date, and so she decides to make spreadsheets to figure out the problem. And it all comes to her kissing skills. Now she wants her best friend and roomie, Finn Mackenzie, to teach her how to kiss properly so she can get her dates to ask her out again. Little did she know that she would end up falling for Finn soon after.

Finn has always been attracted to his best friend, Scarlett, ever since she moved in he has assumed the role of protective brother, but changed the minute she started bringing guys to his house. Now he tells the guys to never come and soon after that they stop calling Scarlett. He knows that it’s not fair for her, but when she asks him to give her “kissing lessons” he can’t help but to give in. Now after spending more time together, and after a series of kisses he knows that he is falling for her, but he doesn’t do relationships. Finn will have to figure out how to avoid hurting Scarlett before it’s too late.

I actually enjoyed reading the story as a whole; it’s one of those books that just keeps you wanting for more. The author does a good job describing the chemistry between the main characters and how it grows throughout the story. They both have pasts that they want to get away from and by having each other they just seem to grow closer. Troubles does begin that minute Scarlett finds out about what Finn has been doing ever since she moved in to his house, and they’ll have to figure out how that is going to change their chemistry after that. Overall, if you’re looking for a cute romantic story filled with steamy scenes they I would highly recommend reading this book, you will not regret it. :)

{EXCERPT}

SEBASTIAN held the phone to his ear.

“I’m just about to take off my clothes,” Aileen’s voice cooed over the line. “Do you know what I have on underneath, Bash? Absolutely nothing. I’ve been a bad, bad girl this year, baby. I’m positive I made the naughty list.”

He leaned back in his bed, sliding a hand down his stomach. He was already in a heated state of arousal. It was Christmas Eve, and he was spending it alone, having phone sex with his girlfriend.

“You should be here to see what being bad gets you,” he murmured invitingly.

Her breathless laugh had him hard already. He toyed with the fly of his jeans and closed his eyes, thinking about the last time this woman made love to him. He pictured her ample breasts spilling into his face as he palmed her sexy curves, and already it was torture. With her honey blonde hair and pinup body, Aileen reminded him of a lingerie model—she was his very own personal Scarlet Johansson.

Sebastian had met her at a charity function about eight months before, and she was just about the only woman who was willing to deal with his demanding job as a firefighter at the Tucson Fire Department.

“If I was there, what would you do to me?” she asked.

His manhood swelled even more, just from her seductive tone. He liked to think they had more than a sexual thing going on. The only problem was, Aileen had already told him she wasn’t looking for a serious relationship.

“You already know, Aileen. I’d light some fires…”

He paused, thinking, phone sex? It was like being in high school all over again. Back then, he was a pimply, gangly teen trying to figure out if the G-spot really existed. He laughed softly to himself. He we sure that by now, at twenty-six years old, he’d have someone to make love to every night, instead of getting blue balls.

“Enough talk, honey,” he said. “How about you clock out early?”

“You know I can’t leave work,” she answered.

He strained to hear what was going on in the background at her job. It was disappointing that she had to work for the holidays. She was usually off nights. He began to wonder if she was just blowing him off. Lately, he was feeling more attached to her. He missed her when she didn’t call, or when he tried phoning and it would go to voicemail. He disliked that she was rarely free to go out.

He sat up and swung his feet over the edge of the bed. It was time to tell her how he felt. He was about to stop her, when he heard a man’s voice in the background. It wasn’t clear what the man was saying, but it sounded intimate.

“Your boss stepped in?” he asked curiously.

“Hang on, um, Barbara,” she said, and in a voice that was nothing like the sexy purr she had been using before.

“Barbara?” he repeated, confused.

The sound became muffled. He could tell Aileen had put her hand over the phone receiver. He never saw himself as naturally cynical. He was lighthearted for the most part. But, when a woman suddenly called out the wrong name in the middle of a conversation—particularly a female name—alarms went off. He gritted his teeth and stood up, trying not to read too much into it.

“Who’s Barbara?” he asked.

“Look, let me call you back.”

Aileen sounded irritated, but Sabastian wasn’t ready to hang up the phone until he got some answers.

“Aileen, is there something I need to know?”

“Barb, seriously, let me call you back. My, uh…”

Suddenly the guy in the background grabbed the phone and replied jovially, “Hey, Barb. Yep, her husband’s home, honey. She’ll have to call you back.”

Okay. That said it all. Sebastian hung up the phone.

Aileen is married?

Fuck. I was played.

{EXCERPT}

Drawing her brown hair into a ponytail, she washed her face, then pulled on her sleep gear. After one last check in the mirror showed she’d gotten rid of the mascara rings under her eyes, she opened the door.

“Taylor, did you—” She stepped out and the words dammed up in her mouth.

The tattoo covering his back was more than ink. It was art. It belonged on full display, where it could be admired, studied, envied.

Black shaded to grey, the edges of the frame bleeding out rather than squaring off. A lone figure was stretched along his spine, and she could feel the pain of the needles as they worked over the thin skin, so close to bone. Stuck in the middle of a desolate wasteland, it conveyed a bitter, suffocating loneliness, the figure hunched over as it walked.

His muscles rippled, and she balled her hands into fists, shocked at the impulses twitching under her skin. She wanted to trace every line with her fingertips, then do it all over again with her tongue. It was a slim back, broader at the shoulder, tapered at the waist, fit and lean. A back that would hide well under a tailored suit.

It had her considering Taylor Smith in a whole new light. The unassuming sales executive with his quiet good looks took on a sleek and sensuous edge.

Her mouth snapped shut when he glanced over his shoulder. “Um. Blankets? Were there any?” Swallowing became very difficult as she watched him walk to the closet, muscles bunching as he reached up.

He tossed the blanket on the bed. “Thanks.” She grabbed the pillow nearest to her and hugged it to her chest. There were scars. Faint ones, thick ones, running over the ridges of his abdomen, up on his biceps, and a long, jagged one trailing down his sternum. There had to be a story behind those, too, and the questions whispered in the back her mind. She wasn’t staring. She just couldn’t bring herself to meet his gaze. She shifted it to the floor, the pillow falling from her hands.

“Sara.”

Her head snapped up.

He reminded her of a hunting cat, all patience and stealth. His expression gave nothing away, although he had to be annoyed by her staring. If her scars were visible, she’d be annoyed, too. She brushed the guilty thought aside. “Yes?”

“Room service? We didn’t get a chance to eat.” He handed her a paper menu. “You done in the bathroom?”

She nodded absently, studying the menu. Better to study the menu than the man in front of her.
When the bathroom door clicked shut, air rushed from her lungs. She had to get a handle on this. This was Taylor. Boring old Taylor. Who cared if his body made him a little more interesting? Under it, he was still the same person who ignored her unless he needed something for work. It was probably her mind’s way of telling her she was ready to take the next step. There were other men out there if she wanted an entanglement. Men who talked. Unlike Taylor.

“Cyrene,” he whispered.

Their breaths mingled in the space between them. They were so close that their noses almost brushed. His hands came around her waist, and then his lips fell lightly, ever so lightly, on her own.

Time froze.

Her eyes fluttered closed, and the taste of him consumed her. His lips were tender and appreciative, covering her mouth and perfectly fitting against her. He drew her against his broad chest, and she circled her arms around his neck.

The kiss intensified. Their mouths moved in time together, leaving her head dizzy. She wobbled on the tips of her toes as he held her in place. He started walking her backward into the bedroom. His hands dug into her dress, bunching the material around her waist. Her knees hit the footboard of the massive bed, and she could barely breathe as she realized where this was all going.

And still, she didn’t stop. The spark had turned into an inferno, flames engulfing them, and they were trapped in the blaze that was their passion.

His hands slid up to cup her face before easing into her hair. “Cyrene,” he murmured between kisses, “stay with me.”

“Come with me to dinner,” he says, futilely trying to comb his hair into submission. I walk to the dining room to collect his jacket from the back of a chair. I hand him his jacket and shake my head.
“Let’s keep our ‘enjoying each other’s company’ an indoor activity, okay?”

“No, not okay. I’m starving and you should be, too. Let’s go grab something together.”

I shake my head again, smile at him, and inch up on my toes to plant a small kiss next to his lips. I then rest my palms on his chest and lightly push him backward. His eyes drop to my hands as he takes a step back.

“Are you kicking me out?” he asks in a confused yet somewhat humored air. “If it's some sort of reverse psychology thing you’re trying, don't worry, you don't have to do that. I want back in, more than you can imagine.”

I beam at him and take another step, shifting around him to open the door. My hands return to his chest; I add a little more pressure, and with a final soft push, he’s out the door.

“Hold on,” he says through a soft chuckle. “Can I at least get your number?”

I say the first digits as he hurries to fetch his phone from his pocket. “Let me just,” he slides the screen to light. Not waiting for him to add the numbers, I just continue with the last four digits. He cocks his head.

“Try to remember it.” I send him a side smile. “If you really want to fulfill every fantasy with me, you’ll remember.”

He repeats the numbers I just gave him with dancing eyes. Dimple full-on. I slowly start to close the door after blowing him a kiss and a small wave. Not a moment passes before I hear an incoming message from my phone that’s on the dining table. My lips widely stretch as I read the message.
Unknown: To be continued…

A gigantic grin plasters over my face as I save the new number to my contacts under The End of Me.
