A Beautiful Gift

Chapter 1

“Where?”

“Under the west pillars of the Golden Gate Bridge in the swampy marsh and fetid pools of saltwater left by the receding tide. She’s been ravaged, first by her assailant then by nature.” The first responder on the scene replied as he wiped his face and mouth with a handkerchief.

“I don’t want her mother to see her like this. The torture of losing her daughter is one thing to live with, but this? This is torture; it’s cruel. Jesus Christ, looks like we’re gonna need dental records to ID her.” This wasn’t Drew Loverhood’s first murder scene, but it was gruesome and ranked right up there with one of the worse.

“You’re right. She should imagine returning her daughter to God the way He sent her to live with her Mother.”

“You okay, Tank?”

“Yea…I got daughters…I threw up when I saw her — I marked off the spot so CSI wouldn’t mistake it as evidence. Sorry. She can’t be much older than my girls, maybe twenty…twenty-five?”

“Yea, I would guess. Has the ME been called? We really can’t touch her until she’s through with the initial examination. Expand the restricted area. I don’t want the press to secure any drone photographs. I want her Mother to remember her as she was in life — joyful, sweet, pure — a beautiful gift.” Detective Loverhood sighed and shook his head.

“Hmmmmm…maybe she will someday.”

“Yea. Christ, where is Hanley when you need him…” Loverhood said to no one under his breath

“I think he took early retirement and is somewhere in the Rockies, sir.”

“Jesus, Tank! Don’t you think I know that? He was my goddamn partner for a decade, right after I got my gold shield.”

“Yea, of course. Sorry.”

“You’re doing a lot of ‘sorry’, Tank. Pull yourself together. Wait up by the demark line for the ME and get her down here without any fanfare, will ya?”

“Sure, Lover, will do.”

“‘Detective Lover’ to you, Tank.” Loverhood didn’t want to bust the guys balls. This was an especially nasty scene. Har for anyone, especially a guy with daughters. We see it every day, but it doesn’t get any easier when the face you see, you imagine is one of your own.

Dr. Celecia Farmer was walking down the hillside below the bridge with her investigator. As she walked, she was putting on rubber gloves.

“Hey, Lover, whatcha got?”

“Pretty self-explanatory, Doc. Young woman, twenty to twenty-five…maybe a hundred and ten pounds, Caucasian, auburn haired. Doesn’t look like a runaway or a hooker, she has a manicure and pedicure. Not much else I can tell without moving her, which I didn’t do, but she is dead.”

“Yes, I can see that from here. Tommy, get some photos, please, before I get in there to take a closer look.”

“What do you think, Doc?”

“Right now, you don’t want to know what I think because what I think doesn’t matter. It’s what I know that matters.”

“You always so ‘by the book’, Doc?” Loverhood knew what he thought but he hadn’t said a word out loud to anyone. He didn’t like where this was going already and the quick conclusions he drew, based on a decade of experience, wasn’t good for anyone. This was going to be a long one, Loverhood already knew that. And messy. He sure wished his partner was here working these cases with him, but he was sure he wouldn’t comeback even if he called him. Or begged him.

Ever since his wife and daughter were killed by a nutcase with a death wish and driven by revenge, Detective Brock Hanley had retired to higher ground. He never wanted to see another bridge, especially not a “golden” one. Lover called him a couple of times a year on special occasions or to ask him about a case or something superficial, but conversations were stilted and awkward, even for as long as they’d know each other and as close as they once were. It was hard, hard to pretend that something precious hadn’t died in him when “his girls” died.

He was a zombie. He had no more to give to anyone because nothing mattered to him. Lover was beginning to think he was just waiting to die himself so he could see them again.

But they both knew that when their numbers were up, they wouldn’t be going to the same place—not after what they both had seen and done. Especially what they had done. They had done things they would never want their wives to know about, walked that fine blue line, the one between legal and downright sinister. Law and order was never pretty and Lady Justice wasn’t blind, she wasn’t fair or just, she was moot. She was a co-conspirator, plain and simple. And she took all she could out of Detective Brock Hanley when she took the only people he ever loved.

“Lover…Lover…Lover!”

“Yea, Doc. Sorry…” He sighed in the face of yet another death, another gruesome, cruel, sadistic death of a beautiful child ripped from a bright future and family that would never be or be the same.

“Listen, I am done here, for now. I can’t tell you much other than this is a suspicious death. She has marks around her neck and petechial hemorrhaging. There are no other marks, abrasions, lacerations, bruises or contusions so she wasn’t dropped from the bridge or down the hillside. And she is missing some vital body parts, but I’ll know more when I get her on the table. I can tell you that ToD was between midnight and six this morning based upon her liver temp and lividity. It could be a sex crime or something more sadistic and sinister. Like I said, I’ll know more when I open her up.”

“So, Doc, how long has she been in the water?”

“I would guess about four to six hours. It was after high tide, though, I can tell you that otherwise she would be all beat up by the surf and there might not be much of her left from the marine life. I will add, though, that she has been ravaged by someone or something.”

“So, how’d she die, Doc, strangulation?”

“Cause of death could be from any one of a number of manners of death. Could be strangulation, drowning, or she might have bled out.”

“Bled out! What from?”

“Well, Lover, you were busy collecting evidence when we rolled her over. She has a pretty nasty horizontal incision in her lower abdomen. Looks like she is missing something from the inside.”

“Sweet Jesus, Doc—what the hell?”

“I am not positive, but it looks like she was either pregnant, maybe not, but they took all her reproductive organs, from what I can tell. So, there could’ve been a baby involved or they just wanted her organs. I can’t know until get in there and the toxicology comes back in about three weeks.”

“Three weeks? We can’t wait that long for the toxicology. We need to know if she was drugged and murdered for her baby or her organs. Either way, there’s some sick fuck out there and we must stop him as fast as possible. Keep this under wraps, Doc, we don’t want to start anything we can’t control with the women in our city.”

“You may have to stop them. There could be more than one sick fuck out there.”

🌟BLOG TOUR🌟 Seven Nights of Sin by Kendall Ryan {REVIEW}

Seven Nights of Sin by Kendall Ryan

Release Date: June 25th 2019 by Kendall Ryan
Genres: Romance, Contemporary

He's the powerful CEO. I'm the know-it-all intern.

Things went further than they should have, but I don't have any regrets. Well, maybe just one...

I went and did the one thing he told me not to – fall in love with him.

Now I have seven days to prove my trust and devotion. Turns out money is a powerful drug, but love is even more addictive.

Seven Nights of Sin is the stunningly sexy and heart-tugging conclusion to The Two Week Arrangement.

My Review:

Seven Nights of Sin is the sinfully sexy conclusion to the Penthouse Affair Duet. It picks up right where the last book left off and we get to see how even though Presley hurt Dominic, he is still willing to protect her no matter what. But trust has been broken and he doesn’t trust her anymore. This puts Presley in a tough spot because she is still working for his company. Until an unexpected trip takes them away and she decides to take it upon herself to make him see that they belong together before it’s too late.

I very much enjoyed reading this book! There is no surprise that Kendall Ryan is one of my favorite authors, she delivers books with the right amount of romance and sexiness to keep you wanting for more. Seven Nights of Sin was no different, it had me hooked from beginning to end. It’s evident that both of the characters have to work on themselves in order to have a future together and we get to see them grow in the story. Even though Presley is young and not as experienced, she is still determined to make a name for herself in order to help her brother. She is smart and it’s her determination that ultimately wins Dominic’s heart. On the other hand, Dominic has built walls around him to keep people at bay and didn’t let himself enjoy his family. He has been through a lot and it’s when he accepts his feelings for Presley is when he finally lets go of his past. I loved the ending, it was sweet and it fit the book very well. I cannot recommend this duet enough, it has everything you would want in a romance story and two little girls that will melt your heart. I highly recommend checking out this book and any others by the author. :)

🌟RELEASE DAY LAUNCH!🌟 The Hate Vow & The Kissing Plot by Nicole French {REVIEWS}

Release Day Launch!

The Hate Vow by Nicole French

Release Date: March 29th 2019 by Raglan Publishing
Series: Quicksilver #1
Pages: 343
Genres: Romance, Contemporary

Eric de Vries.
Looks like millions.
Worth billions.
A body like the David with a mind to match.

Unfortunately for this wayward heir, to keep his money, he needs a wife.
And of all the women in the world, he chooses me.
Too bad I've hated him for five years, since he took all my tears and tossed me away.
The guy slept his way through half of New England and discarded women like hotel toiletries.
Been there. Done that.

Still...what would you do for twenty million dollars?
Would you wear the dress?
Fake a smile for the man who broke your heart?
Or would you run far, far away?

Yeah, that's what I thought.
I'll see you at the church.

My Review:

Not having read other books by the author before, I didn’t know what to expect before reading The Hate Vow. Needless to say, I was impressed with the storyline and characters from beginning to end. Nicole French manages to deliver an addicting story about the glitz and glamour of New York as well as what it takes for a family to maintain its power in the Upper East Side.

At the beginning of the story we get to meet Eric de Vries, a thirty-year-old lawyer who has managed to co-found a successful law firm without the help of his family. It has been ten years since left New York for Boston and hasn’t seen his family ever since. This has giving him time to be independent and become his own person without being influenced by his family. After a tragic event, he vowed to never speak to them again until he gets the call that his grandmother’s health is failing and he is summed back home. With no other choice but to go, Eric faces Celeste de Vries the matriarch of one of the oldest families in Manhattan.

His family name goes way back to the New Amsterdam Shipping company that became one of the biggest in the world. With all that power, it became too much for Eric to bear when his father passed away in a sailing accident. This left Eric as the new heir to the shipping company and he was groomed by his grandmother for him to one day take what’s his. But looking at his grandmother, he remembers the good and bad times that he had at her care and he is ready to show her that she ca no longer control him. That is until she gives an ultimatum, marry within six months and resume his life as a de Vries or watch all the family fortune disappear, thus ending the de Vries’ power once and for all. Eric has never been the marrying type of guy, but if there is anyone out there that he wouldn’t mind getting married to would the one person that hates him the most: Jane Lee Lefferts.

Jane Lee Lefferts never imagined for her life to turn out the way it has since she lost her job. As a lawyer, she thought she had things figured out but everything happened so fast that she found herself without a place and a job at the same time. Now she is back at her mom’s apartment where she is ready to take her life back or at least try to be optimistic while applying to new jobs. She is getting a little make over when she bumps into someone she wasn’t expecting to see, Eric de Vries. Having met in college, Jane and Eric were inseparable. But she figured out right away that he was different than her, he wasn’t a typical college student but that didn’t stop them from being attracted to each other. They had an on and off relationship, until one day things changed and their relationship was never the same. She vowed to never fall for him again, but she never expected to see him reaching out to her again. She definitely wasn’t expecting him to offer her twenty million dollars in exchange for them to get married within six months. To Jane, this is the perfect chance to get the money that she needs to start over so she accepts. But the more time they spend together, the more she starts to realize that she might just be falling fro him all over again.

I absolutely loved reading this book! The glamour of New York never gets old and mixing the history of the family made the story that much more interesting. In the story, Jane has to find a way to fit in with Eric’s family and that didn’t always work out. She is outspoken and fierce. But having grown up with parents who wanted her to have a successful job, she pursues law as her career. Yet, it is her unique style and fashion sense that give her the edge that she needs with the family. On the other hand, Eric is successful at his career and wants nothing to do with the family name. He has worked so hard to achieve that, but he also loves his family and doesn’t want them to suffer the consequences if he decides to not marry. All in all, I would highly recommend checking out the book, it’s full of secrets, romance and steamy scenes to keep you wanting for more. But be warned there is a cliffhanger at the end, but it’s worth keeping up with the rest of the series. :)

The Kissing Plot by Nicole French

Release Date:  June 26th 2019
Series: Quicksilver #2
Genres: Romance, Contemporary

Jane and Eric de Vries.
Often enemies. Sometimes lovers.
Husband and wife. Or are we?

I wore the dress. We said the vows.
And somehow it became more than just a stunt to collect his billions.
A promise bound by love, not hate.
Until he humiliated me in front of all of New York and disappeared.

Now my errant husband has returned, and it's like I never existed.
Except when he looks at me like he wants to rip my dress from my body.
Something's holding him back. And I won't rest until I discover its cause.

See, this wild heir is about to find out: karma's a fickle mistress.
My weapons? Batting eyelashes, high heels, and that red lipstick he can't resist.
I'll break down his mask, little by little. And then I'll make him pay for what he did.
I just need to keep my heart in check while I do it.

My Review:

Having read the first book (The Hate Vow), I couldn’t wait to read The Kissing Plot and it didn’t disappoint at all. Nicole French picks up right where she lefts off in the first book and we get to learn about what happened to Eric after he leaves at the end of the first book. In this particular story, French explores the relationship between Eric and Jane further as they overcome obstacles on the way. It’s evident that they both have a lot to work on, but as they discover new secrets they have to figure out if staying together is worth it in the end or not. The future is uncertain for them, but once they figure out that they can work together they are willing to face anything that comes their way. As they continue their journey, there are ups and downs that along the way ready to break them apart. What I liked about the story the most was how far Jane has come along in her journey. She is stronger than ever and she is just as fierce at the end of the story. I cannot wait to read the final installment in the Quicksilver trilogy, it’s going to be epic. :)

But he never expected to fall so hard for a woman like her. Now as they race across the world to save millions of lives, he’s willing to risk everything to keep her safe.

{EXCERPT}

She put on a bra worth about 300 Euro, the kind that made her wonder why women bothered with this kind of nonsense. The see-through lace demi-cups only served to decorate her breasts, not actually contain them, and didn’t even come close to covering her nipples. Why not just go naked? Mohammed had sent her out to the Alsterhaus, which was like this big fancy mall, to exchange the ill-fitting lingerie he’d bought. Tarek, too embarrassed to sit within eyeshot of a series of near-naked mannequins, was waiting far outside the boutique at a little cafΓ©.

She was staring at herself, stupidly wondering what Sam thought of lingerie, when she heard the knock. She barely had time to grab her shirt when the door opened.

“Don’t worry sweetheart. I’ve seen it all before.”

Sam. Using a cold voice, one she didn’t quite recognize. He held up a hand as though he couldn’t care less about her state of undress. He was wearing a pair of dark gray pants, somehow perfectly tailored to his long body, and a white dress shirt, rolled at the sleeves to show his roped forearms, and opened slightly at the neck. Like he’d just come from a business meeting. It might have been his sexiest look yet.

“Good point,” she said, dropping the shirt onto the chair behind her and almost daring him to stare, knowing her panties were just as transparent. But as he raked his gaze up and down, she felt herself grow warm, remembering how good it had been between them. Wanting more than just his eyes on her. She licked her lips at the thought, and the tightening of his jaw told her he not only noticed, but was thinking the same thing.

Hot and cold, this guy. She was normally good at reading men, but he—or the situation they were in, more likely—was really throwing her off. Really good sex will do that to you too. She decided to get to the point.

“What are you doing here?”

“Time for an update. We thought it would be best if we didn’t always meet at the foundation offices. The surveillance team said you were here.”

“Yeah well my new boyfriend thought I could use some sexy underwear.”

“Yeah?” he said, tilting his head at her. “If I were him, I’d keep you naked as much as possible.”

“Usually he does,” she taunted, enjoying how his eyes flickered with annoyance . . . and something else. Guilt, maybe.

He cleared his throat. “Let’s just get to it, okay? Anything new to report?”

“Yes, I listened in to an interesting conversation.”

“What do you mean, you listened in?”

“Back in New York, Quinn had suggested I—”

“No, fuck that.” He grabbed her shoulders, startling her. “I’m your handler. You do what I say, understood? No more eavesdropping.”

“Yes sir,” she said condescendingly.

“If you get burned, you’re dead.”

“Okay,” she said softly. Thinking, maybe he does care a little.

After a pause, he let out a breath, annoyed, and looked at his hands on her shoulders like he’d forgotten they were attached to his body. He dropped them and stepped back. “So what did you hear anyway?”

She laughed. “What happened to no eavesdropping?”

“You’ve already done it. I’m just saying don’t do it again.”

“Yesterday I was just getting home from shopping and when I walked in the door, I heard him say what sounded like ‘the prah-,’ to someone on the phone. Like the beginning of ‘profit’ or ‘project.’ But he cut himself off and he ended the conversation.” She saw Sam’s eyes widen. “What?”

“Provident?”

“Maybe. It was just a syllable.”

“It was a drone,” he said, taking out his phone to send a text.

“A drone?”

“Quinn thinks they’re reverse-engineering a Provident T-120 drone. This is likely confirmation.”

Right. Of course. They’ve all been back at some office, working on this behind the scenes, she realized stupidly. She’d been so focused on the shit with Mohammed, she felt completely cut off from whatever was going on with the team. She thought of them all, sitting around a conference table like at the restaurant in New York, shooting the usual shit, joking about the op and whatever she was doing with Mohammed. Being themselves. Wondered how hard they were all laughing about her. Just another asset. Just another job, another story to tell over drinks.

“Oh, okay. Good,” she stammered.

“Anything else?” he asked, putting his phone back in his pocket.

“Yeah, he’s got a thumb drive that he protects pretty carefully. It’s shaped like a key and he keeps it on his key chain, always on his person or locked up. One day he even got up in the middle of . . . being in bed with me because he’d forgotten to put it in his safe.” She was pleased to see him shift uncomfortably at how intimate her life with Mohammed had become.

“Okay, great. We’ll need that.”

“Sure, no problem,” she snorted. So much for him caring if she lived or died. “How the fuck am I supposed to get it?”

“I’m sure you’ll manage to distract him. Your skills are . . . singular,” he said, letting his eyes drift again.

“Fuck you,” she snapped. “You can’t actually be pissed at me.”

“Just a little surprised at how quickly you’ve taken to him,” he grumbled. “And it’s disgusting for me to think of that motherfucker with his hands on you.”

“Yeah it must be awful for you,” she responded sarcastically, turning to face the mirror.

That got through to him. “Sorry,” he mumbled, moving toward the door.

“I didn’t take you for the jealous type,” she called after him.

He took the bait and turned around, cocky again. “Sweetheart, you and I both know I could make you come more in ten minutes than he could in ten years.”

Oh, she knew it. Something electric passed between them, and she licked her lips again.

“Prove it,” she dared, wanting to wipe that cold scowl off his face.
