✯BLOG TOUR:✯ Descended by Rose Devereux {REVIEW + GIVEAWAY!}

Descended by Rose Devereux

Release Date: January 29th 2016 by Devereux Books
Series: The Red Blindfold #1
Pages: 189
Genres: Romance, Erotica

"For me, dominance means feeling in control and out of it at the same time. I avoided that dilemma for eight years. Until I met her."

It's Sophie Quinn's chance to make a name for herself. Her assignment: interview investor Marc Brayden, descendant of the most notorious sadist in history. Her mistake: falling hopelessly, obsessively in love.

Marc is mind-blowingly sexy, but determined to stay away from Sophie. She brings out powerful dominant urges that are dangerous to them both. But when he loses control, the pleasure is more than either of them can resist.

Sophie shut down her heart after too much betrayal and loss. Now she's thousands of miles from home and under Marc's spell. What is he hiding? Why do his desires torment him? Torn between love and the truth, she resolves to learn everything she can about Marc's cryptic past, even if she risks losing him forever.

Purchase: Amazon

My Review:

There is nothing that Sophie wants more than to get away from her home, at least for a few days to get her life back on track. She has recently dived into her work, so when her boss decides to send her to France to do an expose on the Marquis de Sade and interview his descendants she takes the opportunity. Yet as soon as she arrives to France, she meets Marc, the handsome descendant of the Marquis de Sade and there is an immediate attraction to him that she can't avoid. There is something about him that keep pulling her in, but his reaction to her seems to give her mixed signals. As she learns more about the lifestyle that the Marquis used to have, the more intrigued she gets, and the more Marc seems to be wanting to be with her.

It is then that after spending time with Marc that Sophie finds out about what is truly behind his facade, and how that makes her feel. She has sparked something in Marc that he tried to avoid for eight years, now he can't hide who he really is from Sophie, and that is what ultimately decides their fate. Overall, the story itself was very interesting. There is really not much character development as it is the first book in the series, so it just prepares you for the rest of the story. Marc is one of those characters that are mysterious yet totally caring and protective. He has tried to suppressed a lifestyle that had taken over the Marquis de Sade, and now that Sophie is there he doesn't know how to control his urges. That alone will decide whether Sophie decides to stay with Marc or not. I will keep reading the rest of the series, it's definitely a series worth picking up. : )

Genres: Romance, Contemporary

He's the hottest MMA fighter in the game, but one woman is ready to try out a few steamy moves of her own in an unforgettable new novel from New York Times bestselling author Lori Foster...

With the life he's led and the muscles he's gained, Armie Jacobson isn't afraid of anything. Except maybe Merissa Colter's effect on him. It's not just that she's his best friend's little sister. Good girl meets bad boy. It's a story that rarely ends well. But Merissa is taking matters into her own hands. No matter how he views himself, the Armie she knows is brave, honorable and completely loyal. And as past demons and present-day danger collide, they're both about to learn what's truly worth fighting for…

{EXCERPT}

Merissa loved her brother. She’d always seen him as Superman, larger than life, a rock whenever she’d needed one. He was only a couple of years older than her, but for as long as she could remember he’d seemed grown-up.

Right now, Superman was in her kitchen, insisting on getting her a drink when all she really wanted was the time alone to let go. She knew if she fell apart in front of him, Cannon would never leave her.

He didn’t need to be a savior, not right now.

“Here.” He returned with a cola over ice, urging her to the couch. He smoothed back her hair, his gaze drawn to the bruise. Yes, it hurt. But the physical discomfort was nothing compared to the fear.

And here she’d promised herself, long ago, that she’d never again let herself be that type of victim.

But this fear—it was more about Armie standing in front of her, using himself as a shield. Risking his own life.

Willing to die.

“Take these.” Cannon handed her two aspirin.

She tried a teasing smile. “This feels so familiar.”

He stalled, then shook his head. “Don’t think about that.”

She couldn’t help herself. They’d lost their dad when she was only sixteen. As the owner of a neighborhood bar he’d resisted the extortion of local thugs, refusing to pay their demanded fees for “protection.” Late one night when he’d been closing, men had come in and beaten him to death.

Devastated but determined, their mom had nearly worked herself into her own grave trying to keep them afloat. Merissa could remember it all like yesterday. The goons wanted her mother to sell but she’d refused.

Until some of those goons had cornered Merissa on her way home from school.

“It’s all the same. You coddling
me, being the strong one for both of us.”

“You were a kid then.”

“You’re only two years older than me,” she reminded him with a shoulder bump. “You were a kid then, too.”

“Maybe. I remember feeling so damned helpless.”

“Like you feel now?” She knew her brother, knew he wanted to make things right for her when that wasn’t his responsibility. “I’m not a kid anymore, Cannon. I can handle it.”
“You don’t have to.”

“Yes, I do,” she told him gently. “Because I don’t want my big brother stuck taking care of me again.”

He folded her hand into his own. “You know I enjoy it, right?”

Her laugh sounded pitiful. But she still remembered how her mother had given in because of her. Cannon had found those men, and even at eighteen he’d made them pay with his fists—because of her.

She’d influenced him into becoming a fighter.

And it was because of her that he’d formed the neighborhood watch. Everyone loved Cannon, but no one could love him more than she did.

“Superman,” she teased. “This time, I promise I can take care of myself.”

A slight knock on the door made her jump.

“It’s just Armie,” Cannon said with a squeeze to her shoulder. “I’ll let him in.”
Nodding, she again thought of the way Armie had stood in front of her, willing to block bullets if necessary.

Emotion welled up, choking her, killing her.

She quickly took the aspirin and tried to get herself together.

Armie peeked in cautiously, saw her on the couch and came in farther. “She okay?”

“Yes,” Merissa and Cannon said at the same time.

Armie gave a slight, tilted smile. “Hey, Stretch.” He came over to her, laid her keys on the coffee table, then winced at the darkening discoloration on her jaw.

“I bruise easily,” she explained. “By tomorrow it’s going to look worse, believe me. But it was just a slap. I doubt you guys would have even noticed.”

Armie crouched down in front of her. “Hey, you’re not a fighter, hon.”

She liked it when he called her something other than Stretch. Something affectionate. “No kidding.” She hadn’t fought at all; fear and the furious beating of her heart had kept her malleable and weak. It infuriated her. “I may be big, but I lack muscle.” And guts.

“Tall,” Armie corrected. “You’re tall, but far from big. More like…”

“What?”

He thought about it. “Delicate.”

A genuine smile took her by surprise. So Armie Jacobson saw her as delicate? Huh.
Knowing she needed to get this over with, Merissa took another drink, then set her glass aside and stood.

Armie slowly did the same, his cautious gaze never leaving her. Cannon stood near him, strangely quiet. They both watched her as if expecting her to lose it at any second.
And maybe she would—if she didn’t have an audience.

Opening Pages / What’s at stake

I think it’s because the first time Chris saw me, I wasn’t me. He saw someone who didn’t exist. And by the time he figured that out, he didn’t care anymore.

He should have cared.

He cares now.

In the half-light of my pitiful bulb, everything looks gray. Dust motes hang in the air. My narrow bed is unmade, sheets tangled. The quilt my mom stitched when I was two hangs half-way off the mattress, stretched toward the door like it too would flee this room if it could. The rest is bare—the drawers, the closet door, the walls. Even the clothes strewn across the chair and rug are plain and dirty.

Somehow it’s never bothered me before. But with Chris here it does.

His eyes are closed, his burnished lashes quivering because he’s screwed so tight. Everything’s shaking under the pressure. The muscles in his jaw twitch. His hand is white-knuckled. His shoulders . . . oh, Lord, help me, those shoulders that have lifted things I can’t carry and swept me along too . . . they’re hunched. Knotted. Pressed in on themselves. On him. There’s so much of him that I feel small, yet he’s the place where I can breathe.

At least, he was.

My insides are in freefall because I did this to him. I shouldn’t have that power over him. I shouldn’t have that power over anyone. But he gave it to me and refused to take it back.
“Chris?” I barely whisper, but he flinches like I screamed. “It wasn’t about—”

“Don’t.” It’s a hard syllable. A word bitten off. He doesn’t even open his eyes. “I swear, Tully, if you say one word . . .” His fist becomes a hammer.

I am ugly. I am black inside, rotting and putrid. I have told him this. Many times. But tonight, finally, he believes me. As he turns on his heel and stumbles out the door, I can’t even call after him. Because when he gave me the power to turn him inside out, I gave him mine. And even though I knew this day would come, knew he was wrong about me, somehow he gave me hope.
As I watch him stagger into the hallway and disappear, that hope begins its death throes. It doesn’t die quietly. It screams and curses and shoves at me. And for the first time ever, I am grateful for my life, for my father, and for this house.

Because if it’s taught me anything, it’s how to take a blow.

Jillian sat down on his plush new sofa and said, “Your apartment is really nice. Did you decorate it yourself?”

He nodded. “I did. I’d much rather have what I like on the walls than what some decorator tells me I should have.”

“Me too,” she said, honestly. “You have a great eye for colors and space…what is it you do for a living?”

“I’m into fashion like you,” he said, taking a seat on the other side of her. He was less than three feet away now and she was alone in his apartment. That wouldn’t be so bad if she didn’t keep picturing herself locking lips with him. She hoped that he couldn’t see her sweat as her internal temperature continued to rise. He didn’t say any more about his job so she said,

“So you bought the Galvan in Paris. Was that your first trip there?”

“No, I’ve been there a lot. I love it there…just the atmosphere and all of the culture.”

Jillian remembered saying that exact thing to Maddy a couple of weeks ago. She was realizing that she and Jude actually seemed to have a lot in common. “So do I,” she said. “I saw so many great art and fashion shows while I was there.”

“Did you get to be there for fashion week?”

“I did! I got to see a show at the Carrousel du Louvre!”

“I was at that one. It was great!”

Jillian found herself wishing she would have met him then. Maybe she would have never met the other man that she’d spent her summer with and left broken-hearted. They talked for half an hour about the fashions coming out this year and she asked him about his family.

“My father passed away a few years ago. It’s just me and my mom now. I’m an only child.”

“Oh, I’m not sure what I would have done without Ethan.”

“Where is that brother of ours?” he asked with a wink.

“He’s in Las Vegas…Sin City for three weeks.”

“Uh oh, look out!”

She laughed. “And that is as much of my brother’s exploits that I want to discuss.” She sat her empty glass down and stood up. “Thank you for the drink Jude, and the conversation. I should take off…”

“So soon?” He stood too and gave her a hot, smoldering look that ignited the fire in her belly.

She was suddenly burning up from the inside out. She had to go…or she wasn’t going to. She smiled and stepped past him. She felt him right behind her as she reached for the door handle.

“Jillian…” his voice was deep and sexy and she knew turning towards him was going to be a mistake…but she did it anyways. As soon as she did his lips met hers and he nudged her back against the wall. She parted her lips and he pressed one hand into the wall and wrapped the other around her waist and pulled her into his hard body as he let his warm, wet tongue snake into her mouth. The taste and the feel of him was intoxicating and before long her own hands were feeling the hard flesh of his back and sliding around to trace the outline of his chest muscles underneath his shirt. She felt him lifting her skirt up and something in her brain was telling her to stop him…but her body was in charge at the moment.

He touched the crotch of her thong and her body exploded in a gush of warm fluid and chills that ran up and down her spine. He rubbed her through her panties and she couldn’t bring herself to tell him to stop. It felt so good and she wanted him so bad…when his fingers slid underneath the elastic and made contact with her hot flesh, her head felt like it exploded. He slid the hand on the wall down and gripped her ass with it as he used his fingers to pleasure her.

The whole time his tongue wrestled with hers and explored every curve and crevice of her mouth. It didn’t take long before her body was shaking and she was crying out in ecstasy as the orgasm washed over her in wave after wave of pure bliss. Jude waited for her to stop shaking before pulling his hand back and moving his mouth over to the side of her face next to her ear, “I need to see you again,” he whispered in a strangled voice.

Jillian couldn’t stop shaking. She wasn’t even sure her legs would carry her across the hall. In a voice she hardly recognized she said, “I have to go.” She turned the door handle behind her and Jude took a step back and watched her go. The desire she saw on his face burned through her like a hot poker. Who the hell is this man?

A yellow cab pulls up to our home, and Kyle walks out to greet the driver. My parents are hugging the little blond, blue-eyed monster. I stare from my window for a second or two, and then I turn my attention to my room. My queen bed is disassembled and up in the attic. Before me now, a twin bunk bed. The brat is going to want the top, and of course I’ll have to oblige because she’s going through a rough time.

What about me? What about my rough time? This girl tortures me. She takes and takes and has never once given back. If you ask me, all that’s happening to her? It’s called justice. Okay, maybe that’s a little harsh. Maybe she’s changed some since she lost her big house with the pool, her rich friends, and her glamorous lifestyle. Maybe she’s a little kinder.

Sucking in a breath and feeling a little guilty for being a snot, I go downstairs and greet Sarah. She enters the house as I reach the bottom step of the stairs. Dark shades mask her eyes, and they match her black sun hat and her black dress. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say she was dressed for a funeral.

“Hi, Sarah.”

She moves her shades down her nose a little and sneers at me. “I see you haven’t changed much, Madison. Didn’t like the highlights?”

She knows I didn’t like them. The evil troll! At Easter, she said she wanted to do my hair. I thought she was being nice. She said we could make it pretty, and I agreed. Stupid me. She said red tints would give my dark brown hair a summery glow. She didn’t put red tints in. She made my hair pink. She claimed she picked up the wrong box. I had to go to school with bubblegum-pink highlights in my hair for almost a week before someone could fix it. A hundred and fifty dollars down the tube.

I smile. “Guess it wasn’t really my thing.”

She rolls her eyes. “Yeah, being cool never has been.”

I knew it! I knew the evil monster did it on purpose. She mocks my clothes, says I dress like a hobo, and all that stuff. My clothes are nice; sure, I didn’t spend $200 for any summer dresses in my closet, but who cares? I’m certainly not going to spend $800 on a stupid purse. Um, hell to the no!

But my cousin has—excuse me, had—over $2,000 to spend per week. I barely have $200 in my bank account. Working five to twelve hours a week for eight bucks an hour is nothing to brag about.

“Where’s my room?” She shoves her sunglasses up her nose and makes her way to the stairs.

“You’re sharing with me. Come on.” I head up to my room, not waiting for her.

She gasps. “Sharing? I’m … Never mind. Apparently, that will have to do. We’ll just redecorate your room.”

I stop and turn on the last step to look back at her. “What do you mean ‘redecorate’?”

“Maddy,” my mom bites out as she follows us up the stairs. “Change can be a good thing.” She walks past me and mumbles, “Remember what the therapist said.”

That quack told us we had to make sure we didn’t try to force Little Miss Unwanted Guest to conform to our ways. He said we should try to appease her as much as possible and ease her into the change. But right now, I wish she was on a boat to China or some other faraway place.

Gritting my teeth, I say, “You know what? My room could probably use a makeover.”

Sarah smiles and enters my room. She looks around, instantly frowning. “I’m getting top bunk.” My mom carries in a few boxes, and Sarah smiles at her. “Thanks, Auntie Heather. Where are the boxes I had shipped here?”

“Oh, I’ll have the guys carry them in.” My mom hugs Sarah. “I know this is a hard time for you, but we’re glad you’re here.”

Pffft! She might be glad, but I’m not, so she can drop the whole “we” business.

As soon as my mom leaves, Sarah removes her sunglasses and hat. She looks around the room and shakes her head. “Well, it’s clear you’re in need of some decorating tips, that’s for sure.” She runs her hands over the matching comforters my mom bought for the bunk beds and laughs. “Seriously, this floral motif is so out.”

I nod like I care. I really don’t. It’s a blanket. It keeps me warm. That’s all that matters. I’m not the homeless one. She is. I’m not the one with parents going to jail. She is. But, hey, maybe this is her way of coping with all that, so I will bite my tongue and not say a word.

“Maddy! Graham and Bryce are here!” my mom calls to me.

I instantly smile, feeling better. My heart is humming to see Graham. As if in another world, I leave my cousin and race down to the two boys. I’m not really keen on Bryce, but that’s because my whole life, he’s been in and out of juvie more times than I can count. He’s a bad boy with a temper. I don’t know why Graham is friends with him.

Graham smiles before I reach the bottom step. “Hey, Maddy! We were … oh, um … Hi.” His attention goes from me to the stairs. I look back and see Sarah. I turn back to Graham and realize he’s looking at her as if she’s the whole moon and stars.

{EXCERPT}

It was dark outside, grown late, and I hadn’t eaten dinner yet. Somewhere out there, Philip was probably dining with crystal and expensive wine. Meanwhile I’d probably order a pizza with one of those coupons by the door.

A low sound raised the hair on my neck.

Oh God, I’m not alone.

My gaze swept over the small dorm room. From here I could see the tiny bedroom area and the kitchenette. I could see almost the entire space. Empty.

Maybe it was just one of my neighbors getting busy and—

The sound came again, louder. A shiver ran through me. It was coming from outside the room, but not from either side. It was coming from the door.

I crept over and looked out the peephole. An empty hallway bulged in the distorted lens.

Now I was doubting myself. Had I actually heard something? Maybe it had come from the dorm room across the hall. When I first moved here, it had been shortly after my “ordeal,” as my adoptive mother called it. I had jumped at every sound, both real and imagined, more traumatized by my brush with danger than I’d wanted to admit.

My gaze snapped to my phone.

I could call my adoptive mother right now, but I knew she wouldn’t want to be bothered. I could call the building management, but I knew what would happen. The same thing that had happened last time I called them. They’d send my floor advisor to check on me. If there was anything scary in this hallway, she’d have to face it first.

And if there wasn’t anything scary, if it was my imagination again, the PTSD I didn’t want to acknowledge, well then everyone would know how fucked up I was inside.

No, I had to be overreacting. This was nothing. There was no one in the hallway. And even if there was, it would be some drunk guy, passed out on the wrong floor.

I’m a normal college student, I reminded myself. I’m not afraid of anything.

Both of those things were lies, I was neither normal nor brave, but at least I could send a drunk frat boy on his way.

I opened the door a crack. Nothing.

Relief filled me, and I opened the door wider.

A body slid inside, slumped over without the door to support him. A short scream escaped me before I caught myself.

He was wearing a three-piece suit stained with blood, his expression slack, eyes glassy with pain and delirium. Philip.

Oh God, he was hurt. Really badly hurt if he couldn’t stand up. Horribly hurt if he’d ever have come to me of all people. I didn’t have time to process the shock of it, of seeing him again. I had to get him out of sight. If he’d been injured like this, someone was after him. Someone would want to finish the job.

After interning for free all summer at the top television station in the Twin Cities, Casey lands an on-air gig. Trouble is, the new role is Sports Girl—which means reporting from local bars and tailgating parties to create excitement for the hometown heroes. All while wearing tiny team jerseys that are so tight they leave little to the imagination.

But she has a plan. Uncover the biggest sports mystery of the decade, and she’ll be on her way. Question is, how far will she go to get the story?

✯BLOG TOUR:✯ Counsellor by Celia Aaron {PLAYLIST + GIVEAWAY!}

Counsellor by Celia Aaron

Release Date: September 28th 2015 by Celia Aaron
Series: Acquisition #1
Pages: 204
Genres: Erotica, Romance

In the heart of Louisiana, the most powerful people in the South live behind elegant gates, mossy trees, and pleasant masks. Once every ten years, the pretense falls away and a tournament is held to determine who will rule them. The Acquisition is a crucible for the Southern nobility, a love letter written to a time when barbarism was enshrined as law.

Now, Sinclair Vinemont is in the running to claim the prize. There is only one way to win, and he has the key to do it — Stella Rousseau, his Acquisition. To save her father, Stella has agreed to become Sinclair's slave for one year. Though she is at the mercy of the cold, treacherous Vinemont, Stella will not go willingly into darkness.

As Sinclair and Stella battle against each other and the clock, only one thing is certain: The Acquisition always ends in blood.

Full disclosure: This book is a dark romance with elements of slavery, violence, BDSM, and super-hot sex. It is the first of a series and ends on a cliffhanger. If you're good with these caveats, enjoy.

AUTHOR BIO:

Hi, I'm Celia. Nice to meet you. Can you keep a secret?

I write smut. Gritty, dirty, delicious smut. This is a secret we can share. I'll do the writing. You do the reading. We have to keep our relationship quiet because I have a highly respectable day job. At night, I become markedly less respectable, as you will see.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you enjoy my stories. And remember, it's our secret.
