I couldn't make myself comfortable. As I continued to shrug, he clasped my shoulders tighter. If I leaned against my car, his hips would press against me. I sagged in defeat and avoided direct contact with his eyes. This was worse than him thinking we could be friends.

"Since you're big, bad boss of this whole operation, what's going on with the bachelor party?" The man wriggled his eyebrows at me when I looked up. It was such a laughable action.Levi was the ultimate bachelor...and rebel. He kept his hair long, rarely shaved, and often dressed in button up shirts with the first three buttons undone and sleeves rolled up, showing off his constant tan. He exuded bad-to-the-bone. And he loved it.No doubt he had particular ideas on what Jake's bachelor party should be like. I had more than enough of a fight to deal with, why would I add a few more in the way of silicon-filled strippers?

"What bachelor party? I'm not in charge of that. I've never planned one, and don't intend to start. It's your job as the best man to figure it out." I poked my finger at his chest. Hard, warm chest, with a steady fluttering from his heart.

"Is it?" He took my hand in his and flattened my palm on his chest, halting my ministrations.

I stared at my fingertips touching his exposed skin. “Maybe you and I can get together soon, just us, and you can give me ideas.”

A number of salacious scenes flashed in my mind. I gulped, realizing my mistake, but the heat had ebbed up my neck and cheeks. Drawing back my hand, I replied, "If you need help, you can call Chase." I spun around to the back of my car, reached in and took out a card from my purse, ignoring the blush on my cheeks and hoping he would, too. The hand that was squeezing my shoulder smoothed its way down to the small of my back when I faced him again. I tried not to focus on the sudden, pleasant warmth in my belly. This was Levi, Casanova of the Bay area…and beyond! He took the proffered card.

"She's the expert on all things...naughty."

Chase would kill me if she found out I gave him her number.

"I have to go."

He removed his hand from my back and held my door open for me. As I settled in my seat,he stuck his head in my car and surprised me with a swift kiss on my cheek, rendering me speechless with how pleasant it felt. Levi had never been this close to me before. I’d never allowed it.After shutting the door closed for me, he leaned his arms over the opened window and cocked his head to one side. Playfulness washed over his face.

"Veronica, you may not like me, but whether you like it or not, I will be around whenever Jake asks me to be there. So you'll have to get used to us being together...a lot."

It felt like he was trying to say more, but I simply nodded my head, and started the car. I waited for him to back away, before I sped off. I was flustered enough to accidentally run over the guy.

“Well, that’s a shame.”

“A shame for whom?” She laughed.

“For you.”

“Look, you seem like a nice guy, but technically I’m still in a relationship.”

“Yeah, apparently with someone who’s not right for you,” he added. “I think we’re meant to be more than just two ships passing in the night.”

“Hmmm…might I remind you your ship is actually sinking…”

“Really?”

“Pretty much since we began this conversation—oh, look at that! Your ship is completely underwater.”

He laughed. “That bad?”

She nodded her head slowly. “I’m afraid so.”

“But you never know. I might be the one you’re looking for.” His eyes twinkled with amusement.

She was taken aback. “I…I’m not looking for anyone. The only reason I’m here tonight was to get away from someone.”

“Right, and here you are…you found me instead. You can’t deny it’s not serendipity.”

“Serendipity?” Olivia repeated.

“Look, I believe you walked into this bar tonight, not by chance, and I was meant to talk to you. When you’re not looking for something and find something extraordinary, that’s serendipity.” He motioned with his hand in the air like it was some magic trick.

She observed in silence, wondering if this sort of crap worked with other women.

“You think you’re something extraordinary?”

“No, not me…us,” he replied.

Olivia laughed. “Do girls fall for this kind of stuff?”

“I wouldn’t know,” he replied honestly and let out a long breath. “All right look, we got off on the wrong foot. Can we call it a truce?”

Olivia bit her lip. She hated to admit it, but she was kind of having fun. Well, maybe just a little. He did manage to get her to forget her problems at least for the moment.

“Nick Montgomery.” He encouraged her by holding out his hand.

She hesitated before taking it. “Olivia…Montiano.”

“Olivia Montiano? Is that your real name?”

“Yeah, why wouldn’t it be?” Her brows tangled together.

“You’re not one of those girls who like to toy with men. Give them a fake name and number?”

“Do I look like the kind of girl who would do such a thing?”

He amusingly narrowed his eyes at her.

“Okay.” She laughed. “Yes, Olivia is my name. I was named after Olivia Hussey.”

“No way!”

She caught sarcasm and narrowed her eyes at him. “Are you familiar with Olivia Hussey?”

“Yeah, sure. Everyone knows who Olivia Hussey is…okay, not really.”

“She’s an actress, obviously one of my mother’s favorites.”

He shrugged. “Anyhow, it’s a lovely name.”

We walked all the way back to the manor instead of traveling by the much faster metal pathways. While he didn’t say as much, I understood that Micah wanted the extra time to clear his head, and I was content to while away the rest of the morning with him. “I’m still a bit… grumpy about being cheated out of our wedding night,” I muttered as we walked.

“Grumpy?” Micah repeated. We’d stopped beside a stream to relax and splash some cool water on our faces. “That is not quite the word I would have chosen.”

“Really?” I’d found a stubby branch, and was doodling in the mud while I sat on a rock, my back to the water. “And what word would you choose, General Silverstrand?”

“Hush. I have not filled that role for a long, long time.” He leaned over and nuzzled the soft spot behind my ear. “Lonely. Bereft. Frustrated. Unmarried.”

“Micah, it’s only been one night.”

“Yes, but until our marriage is consummated, we are not as one. The officiant said as much during our ritual.”

I recalled the actual words of the ceremony—at the time, I’d been too elated to dissect their meaning, but Corporal Rawson had said, “And once you know her as your wife, you are forever joined as one.” I hadn’t realized that that was what they meant, but I suppose it made sense. At least it was an easier requirement than babies.

“Are all marriages like that?” I asked. I felt Micah’s mouth curl into a smile.

“I don’t know. I have only been married once.” He nipped at my ear and added, “As for this marriage, I know that I must lie with you to seal our vows.”

“Well,” I murmured, stretching my neck for more kisses, “I guess we’d better get on that.”

“I agree.” Micah leaned forward to kiss me on the mouth, but he halted when he saw the result of my mud doodles. I had stabbed and slashed at the ground until it looked like a rabid buffalo had churned up the soil. “Sara, what is troubling you?”

Normally, I would have denied any troubles in favor of more kissing, but that’s pretty hard to do when the evidence is right in front of you. “Do… do you think it’s weird that Dad just showed up? I mean, we’ve been looking for him forever, and he just walks right up to the front door?”

Micah pursed his lips, taking a deep breath before he replied. “Weird? Perhaps. However, your father’s return is an unprecedented turn of good fortune. And on our wedding day, no less.”

“I love it when you say that.”

“What?”

“‘Our wedding day.’”

Micah took the stick from me and pulled me to my feet. “Soon, I will be telling you about our wedding night.” He tossed the stick into the stream and tugged me back toward the road and the manor. “Come, my love, my wife, and let me bring you home.”
