🌟 BOOK BLITZ 🌟 Faerest by Brianna Bennett {EXCERPT + GIVEAWAY!}

Faerest by Brianna Bennett

Release Date: November 10th 2020
Genres: Adult, Fairy Tales, Retelling

Mystery has surrounded Sydney White for as long as she can remember. Her mother’s death puzzled even the hardiest of investigators, but eventually, they just stopped trying. So, when Syd is presented with the opportunity to finish a degree in faery anthropology that her mother began over twenty years ago, she leaps at the chance to learn the truth. However, truth is often stranger than fiction, especially when the lines between faery and human are eroding each day. Syd will have to navigate unthinkable deals, a prince in peril she swore she would never speak to again, and an organization only known as Coventry.

{EXCERPT}

Strangely, she could still feel the careful caress of his skin on hers, which of course transitioned into other memories about their final night together. ‘No, we’re not going there.’ she told herself firmly, shaking her head as if that would knock the memories from her brain.

Once she fully came back to the present, she found that Sal had already chosen a track and the timekeeper was counting down. ‘Focus, Syd. Dinner is on the line.’ she told herself, the controller’s smooth plastic familiar and comforting.

Princess Peach, Syd’s favorite character, took off when she accelerated, cruising to the front of the pack efficiently.

She made use of all of the boosters, and she was lapping everyone else within minutes. ‘It feels good to get behind the wheel again, so to speak.’ She thought, and soon enough she found herself embracing the thrill of competition.

While Sal and Syd faced off, Jamie sat between them. Each time someone got ahead of Syd on the track, the lights would strobe ever so slightly, but as soon as she reclaimed first place, they stopped.

He glanced over at Sal and caught Sal looking at him out of the corner of his eye. Jamie’s mouth went dry, and he forced himself to focus on the game. Three rounds later, Syd shot up and cheered for her win.

“YES!” She looked down her nose haughtily at Sal. Jamie watched the scripted awards ceremony unfold, Princess Peach on the top tier, Bowser in second, and one of the computer-controlled racers in third.

“Looks like you’re buying dinner!” she crowed triumphantly.

“I can’t believe I just lost to a princess,” Sal said after a beat, and Syd smirked victoriously.

“There’s your first lesson in Mario Kart and in life: Never underestimate the princess.”

One Last Rose by Laynie Bynum & M. Dalto

“Bella liked books so much more than the real world. In books, there were tales of heroes and princesses and sorceresses, love, honor, and vengeance. Whoever had written the book of her life, however, needed a severe scolding about the proper way to write happily-ever-afters. She was supposed to be riding off into the sunset on the back of a horse with someone of her choosing. But instead, her happily ever after was being foiled by her well-meaning father and the muscle-bound oaf of a man he’d promised her to.”

{EXCERPT}

Excerpt from Anne Stryker's book, Glacier featured in Kingdom of Villains and Vengeance. A story from the perspective of Rumplestilskin.

“Tell me a story,” she whispered, staring at the globe like her world rested within.

I took a deep breath and gazed at the sky. “A story? Since when do you like those?”

Her lips lifted in a small smile, and mine mirrored the action to match. I spun a recycled tale from fae lore, replacing our heroine’s name with hers—likely sacrilege, but for her growing smile, I didn’t care. She fought dragons and rode through plains upon her faerie steed, bolstering legend and carving her name into the world itself. As the theatrical rendition slipped to a close, her smile had fallen.

It took all my strength not to touch her then, draw her close, and whisper the truth, about everything. But I couldn’t bear to see hatred blister in her gaze, not tonight. Enough would happen tonight. And I couldn’t forfeit everything now.

She pressed the globe against her chest and stared up at the stars. “Thank you, my faerie,” she murmured, and a tear traced down her cheek.

My breath held.

She pinned me with those blue eyes that were an echo of mine. “I wish you were real.”

"Give me the tissues.”

I looked up in alarm. Oh shit, was he going to prevent me from taking anything? Why hadn’t I considered that possibility?

Probably because he’d just covered for me to his mother, and he had his own unknown ulterior motive for breaking into her house.

God, I was so stupid for blindly trusting him.

But then he opened his jacket, flashing me the insides. “I can probably hide them here.”

My mouth fell open. “You…” I shook my head. “Wait, you’re going to help me?”

He met my gaze, dead serious, no longer arrogant or sarcastic. “Why not? You worked your ass off for these.” Then he lifted one eyebrow until it arched in that snarky little bent I was becoming all-too familiar with. “Isn’t that how you put it?”

Oh, wow.

For the first time since meeting him, his acerbic manner didn’t grate on my last nerve. I just blinked at him, beginning to see a vague glimpse of the man beneath. And I realized it was all a front. He expertly hid his true self behind taunting barbs and haughty expressions. There was more to him than the asshole he tried to convince people he was.

How incredibly unusual.

He motioned toward my stolen goodies with one finger. “The tissues would be in that rectangular-shaped cardboard box right there,” he explained unnecessarily, having way too much fun talking down to me.

Damn, he was really good at playing the sarcastic jerk. Except this time, I saw the compassion behind his supercilious ruse.

“Uh…” Shaking my head to clear it because I was still discombobulated by this turn of events, I grabbed the tissues without hissing at him for his rude crack and I handed them over, murmuring, “Sorry. Here.”

He frowned at me in confusion, then tipped his head to the side as his eyes narrowed distrustfully. But even as he took the tissues, he added, “The soup too. You can probably conceal the soda in your front hoodie pouch, if it’s the only thing in there.”

He had a point. Nodding, I removed the can from my hoodie’s pocket. “Okay. Thank you.”

The thank you actually made him rear his face back in shock. This time, he refused to take the can from me, just eyed it as if I was offering him poison instead. “What the fuck is wrong with you?” he hissed.

“What do you mean?” Lowering my voice, I gaped at him. “Nothing’s wrong with me.”

I thrust the chicken noodle soup at him again. Why didn’t he just take the damn can before his mother showed up in the closet too, wondering why the hell we were taking so long?

He glanced toward the opening of the closet as well before turning back to me and whispering harshly, “You’re acting weird.”

“Oh my God.” My eyebrows shot sky high. “You’ve known me five fucking minutes. How do you know what my weird is? And besides, this is frankly a weird, super unreal situation. How else am I supposed to act?”

My irritated answer, along with the scowl I sent him, seemed to settle him again. His shoulders relaxed and his features lost their alert confusion.

“Well, your compliance was at odds with the first four minutes and forty-five seconds of our association,” he explained.

Wow, he didn’t respond well to politeness at all, did he?

But compliance? Did he seriously just call me compliant? Way to make me sound like a submissive little lap poodle.

Maybe his pomposity wasn’t entirely an act after all. He was probably a genuine asshole with just a small side serving of kind.

Narrowing my eyes, I bit out from between gritted teeth, “You were helping me. I was being grateful. But don’t worry; I’m over it now.”

“Good,” he bit out. “We don’t have time for that bullshit, anyway.”

🌟BOOK BLITZ:🌟 Wonderland Academy: Book One by Melanie Karsak {EXCERPT + GIVEAWAY!}

Wonderland Academy: Book One by Melanie Karsak

Release Date: August 27th 2019 by Clockpunk Press
Genres: Fairy Tales, Fantasy, Retelling, Young Adult

Welcome to Wonderland Academy. Don't lose your head.

Getting into Wonderland Academy is easy, if you meet the admission criteria.

You must be a little mad.
You must follow the white rabbit.
You must find the key to enter Wonderland.

If you can nail all three, you're in. The only exception? Wonderland Academy never accepts students named Alice. By order of the Queen of Hearts, any Alice found sneaking into Wonderland will be behead.

Which begs a question. Why in the hell am I here?

My name may be Alice, but Wonderland Academy is everything my real life isn't. My boyfriend recently died. I just did a stint in a psych ward on suicide watch. And everyone thinks I'm "crazy" because I see people who aren't there. Ridiculous, right? That's why I'm willing to risk my neck to be here as "Lacey" Crane.

But who wouldn't want to learn how to ride a jabberwocky, train with a vorpal sword, cast spells using a teacup, or shapeshift into a fairy? As long as no one figures out my real name, I should be fine.

The only problem? Aiden, the Queen of Hearts son, is quickly becoming my best friend. And then there's Corbin. Despite the fact my heart is still broken, every time I see him something inside me flutters to life. How I'm going to pass my classes, and protect my secret like my life depends on it is beyond me. But I better find a way. Because in Wonderland, no Alice is safe.

* * *

Wonderland Academy re-imagines the fantastical world of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland for a fresh, new adventure. Combining whimsy,magic, and a splash of steampunk, New York Times best-selling author Melanie Karsak invites you into this beautifully re-envisioned fairy tale adventure.

{EXCERPT}

As I looked around my room, memories flooded my mind. Today was not a good day to think about it. Today was a day to pretend the world didn’t exist. Not finding my copy of A Discovery of Witches, I grabbed my tattered but much-loved copy of Outlander. Getting lost in Scotland for a while sounded like a good idea.

I headed back downstairs to the kitchen.

“Lacey?” Nan called me.

“I’m coming, Nan.”

“Better hurry up. You’re getting late.”

I grabbed a soda from the fridge and prepared a glass of ice. I really needed a coffee, but I’d come back. Nan was probably thirsty. I headed back to Nan’s room.

“Here you go,” I told her, setting the cup on the TV table. I popped the tab and poured her drink. “So, did John get a dollar?”

“No. Thirty lousy cents. Your ticket,” Nan said, tapping the envelope for Wonderland Academy.

I shook my head. “Okay, Nan.”

Nan frowned at me. “Open it.”

“Sure. In a minute. I forgot my book in the kitchen. I was going to put on a pot of coff—”

“No. You’re getting late. And grab that,” she told me, pointing to a suitcase sitting beside the loveseat.

I sighed. God knows what she had packed up now. Once, we’d found her with a bag full of her old, formal gowns. “What’s in it?”

“Take it.”

“You packed a suitcase? Nan—”

“Pick it up, Lacey,” she said sternly, her voice tempered with annoyance.

I turned and grabbed the suitcase then set it at my feet.

“Now open this,” she said, handing the envelope to me for Wonderland Academy.

Swallowing my annoyance—Nan didn’t know I’d been in the hospital and was really in no state to be bossed around—I took the envelope from her. I jabbed my finger inside and opened the letter.

Light blasted from the envelope. On the other side of the house, the old grandfather clock, which hadn’t worked for years, started bonging. The sound was so loud, I winced. The walls around me began to bend strangely, the shapes on the TV and the furniture warping. The laughter coming from the television sounded weird and dark, the laughing voices stretching out long. My head was spinning, and there was a strange, sweet smell in the air. It smelled like…orange marmalade. Christ, was I having a stroke? My stomach turned. I felt like I was going to throw up.

I looked down to steady myself. When I did, I spotted a large black dot spreading across the floorboards underneath my feet.

The clock bonged.

My ears started ringing.

“What the hell?” I whispered.

I looked at Nan, who was grinning wildly at me.

She waved. “Don’t tell them your name. And don’t lose your head.”

And then the spot on the floor opened and sucked me down.

I tumbled into the darkness.
