Fearless

Series: Fearless #1
Pages: 192
Genres: Romance, New Adult

Beautiful heiress Dalilah Gallagher, a former child art prodigy, has lost her way. Harsh criticism in her formative years has left her floundering and without the artistic voice that once centered her life. Now, at the age of 20, she has spent the last nine years trying to reclaim what she lost.

Her struggles lead her to the nude-modeling world in New York City, where she hopes she will find her passion for art again. What she finds is surprising: Her artistic voice isn't gone, merely misplaced.

Luke Roberts has a different problem. Raised by a solid, working-class fisherman in Maine, Luke is a gifted artist struggling to get a foothold in the busy New York City art scene. His gifts attract the attention of a wealthy benefactor, Blake Nottingham, who finds himself fascinated with Dalilah. Nottingham commissions Luke to provide him with a piece of art: A painting of Dalilah.

As the two young artists fall in love, Dalilah finds her artistic voice once more, so she'll do anything to help Luke find the prominence he deserves. This leads to a dangerous game of deceit that puts Dalilah in Nottingham's clutches when she tries to manipulate him into helping Luke.

Nottingham isn't easily manipulated, though, and things go seriously awry for Dalilah. What happens when the manipulated becomes the manipulator?

Will Dalilah's lies cause her to lose the one person that means everything her?

The Wall
by Jen Minkman
Release Date: December 14th 2013
Pages: 170
Genres: Young Adult

'I walk toward the sea. The endless surface of the water extends to the horizon, whichever way I look.
Our world is small. We’re on our own, and we only have ourselves to depend on. We rely on the Force deep within us as taught to us by our forefathers.
If I were to walk westward from here, I’d come across a barrier - the Wall. Behind it, there are Fools. At least, that's what everyone says. I’ve never seen one.'

Leia lives on an island where children leave their parents to take care of themselves when they’re just ten years old. Across the island runs a Wall that no one has ever crossed. The Fools living behind it should be shunned because they believe in salvation from across the sea. That's what The Book says, the only thing left to the Eastern Islanders by their ancestors.
But when a strange man washes ashore and Leia meets a Fool face to face, her life will never be the same again. Walt, the boy from the other side of the Wall, isn’t as foolish as she was always led to believe. And as Leia and Walt set out to bring the truth about both their societies to light, all the things they once took for granted fall by the wayside.

Their island world is about to change... for better or for worse.

Welcome to SmartMart, where crime pays minimum wage...

Busted. Alexis Dubois just got caught shoplifting a cheap tube of lipstick at the local SmartMart. She doesn’t know what’s worse—disappointing her overbearing beauty-pageant-obsessed mother for the zillionth time…or her punishment. Because Lex is forced to spend her summer working at the store, where the only things stranger than the staff are the customers.

Now Lex is stuck in the bizarro world of big-box retail. Coupon cutters, jerk customers, and learning exactly what a “Code B” really is (ew). And for added awkwardness, her new supervisor is the totally cute—and adorably geeky—Noah Grayson. Trying to balance her out-of-control mother, her pitching position on the softball team, and her secret crush on the school geek makes for one crazy summer. But ultimately, could the worst job in the world be the best thing that ever happened to her?

Review:

Paper or Plastic was just a cute romantic read that will leave you wanting for more.

From the very start I was intrigued with the synopsis, it sounded very promising, and it did not disappoint at all. Every single character is put in the same setting, and as readers we get to see and learn their stories as well. SmartMart is widely known for its employees, and for the events that happen there that others would find laughable. When Alexis Dubois is caught shoplifting, she only has one option if she does not want what she did in her permanent record, and that is to work there for the time being. She immediately regrets what she did, but her overbearing mother is not about to let that do until Alexis learns her lesson. What her mother does not know is that Alexis is so tired of being “perfect” that she wanted to challenged her mother, and what she got out of it was a summer job. What she also did not realized that she was about to learn just how real, and loyal everyone at SmartMart really is.

Noah Grayson has his own problems to worry about. Even though he is smart, his reputation at school makes him nonexistent. Everyone blames him for what he did to Alexis best friend, and non one wants to be associated with him. Working at SmartMart has giving him the experience that he needs for a job, as a supervisor he knows everyone in the store, and everyone seems to like him there. It becomes a home for him, one that he is proud of. But being surrounded with so many characters in the work force, he is bound to see just about anything that could happen in the store. But when he finds out that Alexis Dubois is about to be his co-worker, things slowly start to spiral out of control when he finds out just how much he really likes her. As the two start to spend time together at work, sharing meals together, it is evident that they both want to be something more than just friends. But what is keeping them apart can hurt Alexis friendship with her best guy friend, and that is something that she is not so sure if that is what she wants.

I absolutely loved the secondary characters in the book, they are all well thought out, and their stories are the ones that bring a little extra to the story. I enjoyed reading about Alexis work at SmartMart, it was entertaining to see her working with her co-workers. There is one employee that likes to play tricks on the customers, and other employees as well that I just found hilarious! Her interaction with Noah Grayson is sweet. He cares for her, and they have a lot in common, since their mothers are into beauty pageants and so Alexis and Noah's little sisters end up in competitions. Noah is one of those characters that has been through a lot, having an abusive dad is what drives him into working ten times harder than others just to maintain his mother, and sister. Whereas Alexis does not have a live like that, she does worry about her grandmother, who suffers from Alzheimer's. So they both suffer emotionally, and that is just one of the reasons they fit well together. Overall, I enjoyed reading Paper or Plastic, it was a cute read that I highly recommend. :)

Review: Love and Other Unknown Variables by Shannon Lee Alexander

Love and Other Unknown Variables
by Shannon Lee Alexander
Released Date:  October 7th 2014 by Entangled: Teen
Pages: 350
View/Purchase: Goodreads, Amazon, B&NEntangled Publishing, iBooks
Author: Website, Goodreads, Facebook, Twitter

Charlie Hanson has a clear vision of his future. A senior at Brighton School of Mathematics and Science, he knows he’ll graduate, go to MIT, and inevitably discover solutions to the universe’s greatest unanswered questions. He’s that smart. But Charlie’s future blurs the moment he reaches out to touch the tattoo on a beautiful girl’s neck.

The future has never seemed very kind to Charlotte Finch, so she’s counting on the present. She’s not impressed by the strange boy at the donut shop—until she learns he’s a student at Brighton where her sister has just taken a job as the English teacher. With her encouragement, Charlie orchestrates the most effective prank campaign in Brighton history. But, in doing so, he puts his own future in jeopardy.

By the time he learns she's ill—and that the pranks were a way to distract Ms. Finch from Charlotte’s illness—Charlotte’s gravitational pull is too great to overcome. Soon he must choose between the familiar formulas he’s always relied on or the girl he’s falling for (at far more than 32 feet per second squared).

My Review:

For a debut novel, Shannon Lee Alexander has done an amazing job bringing readers a fresh story that will certainly leave everyone wanting for more.

Charlie Hanson's story had me captivated from the very beginning. It was interesting and entertaining to read from a male's point-of-view. His perspective on things were refreshing, and so was his personality. He has a clear vision of what he wants to do with his future, and attending Brighton School of Mathematics and Science has his ticket to MIT, but being mathematically gifted doesn't give him any luck at finding a date. Every time he tries to make a move on a girl, he ends up getting hurt, (he basically doesn't know how to act around girls), but his luck changes when he meets Charlotte, the girl with an infinite tattoo that catches his attention from the start.

Being new to town, Charlotte quickly befriends Charlie's younger sister and starts spending a lot of time at Charlie's house. Although their first encounter was unexpected, Charlie immediately finds Charlotte interesting, but stops himself from pursuing a relationship with her because he doesn't want to damage the friendship that Charlotte has with his sister.

As the new school year begins, the students at Brighton are preparing to send their college applications, but first they have to take an English class, and with that comes a new English teacher, who also happens to be Charlotte's older sister. But being a school of math and science, not everyone takes literature seriously, and the students are determined to get Ms. Finch to quit by starting a series of pranks to get her to leave. What they don't know is that Ms. Finch knows what she is up against and is willing to ignore their pranks. When Charlie finds out that Charlotte happens to be Ms. Finch's younger sister, he starts to question whether to stop the pranks or not. As soon as Charlotte finds out about them, she convinces Charlie to keep going with the pranks in order to get Ms. Finch's attention away from her. What started with them spending time together, ends up becoming so much more the minute Charlie finds himself falling for Charlotte. But not everything is forever, and things change when he finds out what Charlotte has been hiding from everyone, including him.

I really liked the overall idea of the book, I had some teary-eyed moments, but it wasn't awfully depressing at the end. Alexander did a good job executing the story and even the way the chapters were numbered was creative. I'm not someone that enjoys math, but adding it to the story really made it unique. Apart from having its funny scenes, the book also deals with a serious topic that did not overpower the book. The character's personalities, especially Charlie's personality was my favorite, he is just one of the sweetest guy's I've ever read in any book. He is timid, who also has a sense of humor, blushes (a lot...:D), and he also happens to be very, very, very smart. The book was very well-written, and the ending was satisfying (although I feel that there could have been one more to the ending, it felt a bit abrupt for me), but that's just my preference. Overall, if you are looking for a heartwarming story that is full of funny scenes, and romance, then I highly recommend this book, it would not disappoint. :)
