{EXCERPT}

The commons was designed as a place for officers and elites to enjoy simple recreation and eat without cause for ridiculous ceremonies, such as saluting and acknowledging every single rank beneath them. It was also open all hours of the day to accommodate the various schedules, whereas the mess hall operated during normal meal times only. As I entered, I found it packed with all ranks, eyes glued to the TV lowered from the ceiling in the center of the room. The volume was so high it echoed through the halls. Even the shower room on the basement level picked up a low murmured hum just above the buzz of lights when I went to clean up after another workout.

It appeared the news stations had somehow caught wind of the mysterious happenings there. Strange lights, voices, people in dark vehicles coming and going at all hours of the day and night. That wasn’t news to me, and I didn’t want anything else to do with the place. Rarely did the media tell the truth on what really happens. It was better I ignored the report altogether.

I squeezed and pushed my way to the fridge to pull out a pimento sandwich and bottle of water then managed to wiggle my way to the cabinet on the far end for a small bag of chips. Deciding it would be better to eat in my room, I made my way to the door. Right as I reached it, I realized the room fell silent. Looking up, I met the eyes of every soul in the crowded room. They seemed to wait for my reaction.

Then my eyes lifted to the TV, narrowing in on a set of orbs that were like empty black pits with a sprinkling of brown. The single dimple on his cheek remained put as he flashed his arrogant smile to all the cameras surrounding him. My lungs constricted, expelling what seemed like the last of the air left in the room. A black rim dotted my vision and a strange swishing in my ears overwhelmed every other sound. Something crashed to the floor with a loud clatter that echoed too much. My vision faded, and my legs gave out from under me.

{EXCERPT}

It’s just the two of us, our eyes locked on each other. She’s beautiful. I hadn’t noticed that before, but now it’s hard notto notice it. Everything about her is perfect and symmetrical, to an almost unattainable level. Flawless skin, blonde hair and slender, she’s the type of girl you’d think was Photoshopped if you saw her on a magazine cover. For all her perfection though, the thing I find most attractive is the way her hair keeps spilling from the knot she tied it into. It’s the only thing out of place.

She stands up, and then walks over to my bed, inspecting me just as curiously. The way she looks at me makes me wonder if I look as beat up as I feel.

“How are you?” she asks, breaking the silence.

“Okay, I guess, for someone who’s just been stabbed.”

“Seven times.”

“What?”

“You were stabbed seven times,” she repeats. “I heard one of the doctors say that.”

“Oh.”

Her eyes drift over my face and across my chest, pausing over my left shoulder, where I remember seeing most of the blood. That’s where they cut me the deepest—right beneath my shoulder blade. Even with the morphine drip I can feel it.

“Why did you help me?” I ask her.

She pinches her brows together like she doesn’t understand the question. “You were in trouble.”

“Most people would’ve run out of that alley as fast as they could.”

“And leave you there to die?” She shakes her head, frowning. “Where I’m from, we don’t just look the other way.”

I don’t believe her. People are generally the same everywhere. When there’s trouble, they get scared. And when people get scared, they run. I’m pretty sure she’s the exception, but I don’t tell her that.

“I suppose I owe you for tonight.”

“Yeah, I kinda did save your life,” she says, her blue eyes sparkling. “But no biggie.”

“I don’t like owing people debts,” I tell her seriously. “Let me write you a check. I have money.”

“Is that how you usually handle this type of situation?” She sounds amused, not at all excited by the prospect of money.

I shrug, and then grunt when I feel a sharp pain to my shoulder. “I don’t know. I’ve never been in this type of situation.”

She smiles, and if it’s even possible, becomes more beautiful. It makes me catch my already unsteady breath.

“I don’t want your money.”

“Everyone wants money,” I argue, because it’s the truth.

She shakes her head, uncompromising.

I let out a sigh. When I said I didn’t like owing people, I meant it. A debt will haunt me, especially one as big as this. “Then what do you want?”

“Hmm.” She tucks her hair behind her ear. “Maybe a favor? One day I might need your help.”

“You don’t even know me,” I point out. “How do you know I’d be any help to you?”

“You didn’t know me either, and yet, here we are.”

“Point taken.” But still objected.

“Why don’t we just chalk this up to what it is—a good deed. It makes me feel good to think of it that way.”

She flashes me that amazing smile of hers again, and it has the same effect on me as it did before. I try to speak, but nothing comes out. I’ve never been around someone with the ability to leave me speechless. I’m not sure I like it.

“It may be a good deed in your eyes,” I say, trying to piece my thoughts together. “But I still see this as something I need to repay.”

She leans against the side of my bed, invading my personal space. She’s so close I can smell her. For being stuck in a hospital all night, I wonder how she can smell so good.

“In that case, I promise one day you will repay me.”

“Just not today, right?”

She shakes her head. “Nope.”

“Are you planning to steal my firstborn child?”

“Yes, now you’re onto the inner workings of my evil mind.”

Evil. Ha.

Whatever she is, she’s the opposite of evil. I don’t understand her, but part of me wishes I could keep her around to remind me of what people are capable of.

“Who are you, Charlotte Hart?” I say, shaking my head. “I thought your brand of human went extinct a long time ago.”

“Nah,” she says, grinning. “There are still a few of us out there.”

“So, tell me the truth,” I say, staring out at the horizon from Mallory Square as the sun dips below the sea and sets the sky awash in pink and purple, dessert in hand. “Is this your standard swooning date? Or did I get an Oliver original?”

Lifting his brow, a smile plays on his lips. “That depends.” He takes a slow lick of his gelato while eyeing me. “Are you thoroughly swooned?”

Am I thoroughly swooned?

Totally and completely.

“Eh.” I shrug, pretending to be unimpressed, despite having just been on a date that could rival any written in the pages of my favorite romance novels. “I mean, I’ve had better. But I’ll definitely give you an A for effort—since getting good grades is apparently your thing now,” I say teasingly before walking down the boardwalk as the cool, salty air blows against my sun-drenched skin.

“Oh, yeah?” Ollie says, running up behind me, wrapping an arm around my waist, and twirling us around in a dizzying circle until I’m laughing uncontrollably. “You say you’ve had better, huh?” He sets me back on solid ground, but leaves his arms around my waist to hold me steady, keeping our bodies pressed tight against one another. “Good thing this ‘Ollie original’ is a five-parter. Remember? And by my math—you know, since I’m a college guy and all now—we’ve only done four. So…you ready for part five? The swooniest of all?”

The swooniest of all? Is that even possible after everything we’ve done? With a smile as carefree and happy as summer itself, I slip my hand into his, ready to find out.

“Swoon away, Oliver Hayes. Swoon away.”

Release Date: July 28th 2015 by Casey Shay Press
Pages: 300
Genres: New Adult, Romance

A new full-length standalone romance from the USA Today bestselling romance series

Jenny is a girlfriend-for-hire, the platonic kind.

While under contract with her movie director boyfriend, glamour has ruled. Designer gowns. Red-carpet premieres. And, of course, seeing her face in the tabloids.

She loves tabloids.

But her reign has come to an end. Her sugar daddy has fallen in love -- with someone else. Her contract is over and tonight she has to end it publicly by making sure the paparazzi "catches" her with another man.

She just has to find the man.

Chance has been hitchhiking across the US, playing and singing for tips. This is the life he's always imagined, and the farther he gets from his disastrous family in Tennessee, the better he feels.

An unexpected invitation to sing with an indie blues group at a movie premiere party gives him a sweet taste of fame. As a bonus, a beautiful girl with pink dreadlocks only has eyes for him.

But the collision between Jenny and Chance is more emotional and intense than either of them expected. When the scandal hits the news, Chance's family finds him, pushing him to come home and face his demons.

The night has even more consequences for Jenny. She needs to find Chance, but nobody knows anything about him, not even his last name.

{GUEST POST}

The Song Behind the Book Forever Bound

I was DUMBSTRUCK when I first read the words to my friend Brad Whittington's song "Forever."

There ain't nothing you can say

To make me turn away

There ain't nothing you can do

To make me take my love away from you

Because I said forever

And that's just what I'm gonna to do

I couldn't have imagined a song that better fit the theme of my Forever series. All the books have couples struggling to find their forever loves, and the newest novel in the series, Forever Bound, was definitely no different.

Chance is a singer/songwriter hitchhiking across the US for tips. Jenny has just been let out of her contract as a girlfriend-for-hire. Their collision is supposed to be a one-night stand. But it becomes something so much more.

Chance writes a lot of songs in the novel, courtesy of Brad's talented lyrics, and I was thrilled when both Brad and his don Daniel recorded acoustic and full-band versions of the song.

So go give them a listen!

{EXCERPT}

The guy I’d been watching walked over to the mike and said, “Hello, I’m Chance, and Paul here has kindly invited this Tennessee boy up to do a number.”

His name was Chance.

“Yeah!” Paul bellowed. He lifted his guitar strap over his head and handed it to Chance.
I made it to the base of the stage, where the crowd had left a gap in its disinterest. I wondered if my boy choice was doing to get their attention, or if he would be terrible.
I was rooting for him.

The band crashed into the opening licks, and when Chance started singing, I wanted to laugh out loud with giddiness. His voice was pure magic, deep and edgy.

He moved across stage like a fury, all energy and muscle. I was so close I could feel the wood floor shifting under his feet. His fingers squeezed the guitar in a steady grip. I was mesmerized by every movement. I could already see how his skilled hands would work on me.

I was hooked.

The song rollicked along for another chorus, then Chance brought them to a strong stop with a motion of his hand.

That’s when he saw me.

He froze a second, as if he couldn’t believe I was so close after he’d searched for me for so long. His smile spread to a wide grin. I’m sure my panties would have gone flying, if I’d been wearing any.

☼ Waiting on Wednesday (#99) ☼

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

Never Always Sometimes
by Adi Alsaid
Expected Publication Date: August 4th 2015 by Harlequin Teen
Pages: 320
Genres: Contemporary, Romance , Young Adult
Author's Links: Goodreads,  Twitter,

Never date your best friend

Always be original

Sometimes rules are meant to be broken

Best friends Dave and Julia were determined to never be cliché high school kids—the ones who sit at the same lunch table every day, dissecting the drama from homeroom and plotting their campaigns for prom king and queen. They even wrote their own Never List of everything they vowed they'd never, ever do in high school.

Some of the rules have been easy to follow, like #5, never die your hair a color of the rainbow, or #7, never hook up with a teacher. But Dave has a secret: he's broken rule #8, never pine silently after someone for the entirety of high school. It's either that or break rule #10, never date your best friend. Dave has loved Julia for as long as he can remember.

Julia is beautiful, wild and impetuous. So when she suggests they do every Never on the list, Dave is happy to play along. He even dyes his hair an unfortunate shade of green. It starts as a joke, but then a funny thing happens: Dave and Julia discover that by skipping the clichés, they've actually been missing out on high school. And maybe even on love.

REVIEW: No Kissing Allowed by Melissa West

No Kissing Allowed
by Melissa West
Release Date: July 28th 2015 by Entangled: Embrace
Genres: Romance, Contemporary
Author's Links: Website, Goodreads, Twitter, Facebook
View/Purchase: Goodreads, Amazon, B&N

A new adult romance from Entangled's Embrace imprint...

No kissing. No touching. And definitely no falling in love...

Armed with her besties, an embarrassing number of shots, and her list of 10 Wild Things To Do Before Adulthood, recent grad Cameron Lawson is partying it up before she starts her dream job at New York's biggest ad agency. Her last task? Hook up with a random guy. And while it's so not her style, the super-sexy guy sitting next to her is definitely game. No names. No details.
At least, that was the plan.

On her first day of work, Cameron discovers her hook-up is none other than Aidan Truitt-her new boss's boss. Talk about failing the "no fraternizing with coworkers" policy on an epic level. Especially when Aidan makes it clear their one night was only the beginning. Falling for him could cost her everything, but sometimes the only way to get what you want is by breaking a few rules...
(Synopsis taken from Goodreads)

My Review:

Aside from the beautiful cover, No Kissing Allowed was such a great read, filled with romance that had me rooting for the characters until the very end.

Recent grad Cameron Lawson is ready to take on adulthood, but first she along with her friends make a list called 10 Wild Things To Do Before Adulthood, which gives them tasks to do before the big day when they get to go to their adult jobs. But with too many shots, Cameron gets an 11th task, and that is to kiss a stranger. Not willing to back down, she gives in after a stranger over hears them and volunteers for the task ahead. With absolute no idea who he is, Cameron kisses the stranger after feeling a stranger pull towards him. Things then start to move quickly as the two end up sleeping together. Waking up the next day with him naked scared Cameron and she flees away without turning back. Too bad things didn't quite end up going well for her on her first day at her job when she discovers that the stranger that slept with is non other than Aidan Truitt, her boss's boss!

Soon Cameron discovers that there is a “no fraternizing with coworkers” policy at her job, and she is willing to do anything from messing up. But Aidan seems to have other ideas as he is the one whose flirtatious moves are making Cameron give in to their attraction and take the next step. Aidan wasn't expecting to see Cameron ever again, but everything changes when she gets the job at the same company as him, and he is determined to show her that a relationship with him could work.

Although there are many stories with similar plots, No Kissing Allowed really pulled me in from the very start. It was such a page-turner for me that I couldn't put down. With that said, the major issue in the book is trying to get around the no fraternizing policy that is pulling the characters apart. Yet underneath all of that we truly get to know Aidan and learn more about his past. Both of the characters know that they can't take things further, but when Cameron invites him to meet his family that's when things start to move fast and go a bit downhill. That's also when we get to learn more about Cameron's past and her father's loss that really took its toll on her. Now they both have to fix their problems in order to move on. Overall the author does a great job with the pace of the story, we get character development, and the ending is just perfect for the story. I highly recommend it if you're looking for a new romance book filled with sweet scenes that are going to leave you wanting for more. :)

REVIEW: Baby's Got Bite by Candace Havens

Baby's Got Bite
by Candace Havens
Released Date: July 28th 2015 by Entangled Publishing: Covet

Genres: Paranormal, Romance
Author's Links: Goodreads, Website, Twitter

Some consequences bite . . . big time.

Linc Monahan can't believe it. This wasn't supposed to happen. He's a werewolf, and shouldn't be able to father a child with a human. Now Linc has to find some way to tell Bennett that not only do werewolves exist, but she's about to have a baby with one.
But when word of their surprise conception gets out, the fur hits the fan. There are people who don't want this baby to be born—even if it means killing. Now Bennett and Linc aren't just fighting each other . . . they're fighting for their lives.
(Synopsis taken from Goodreads)

My Review:

Baby's Got Bite was such a cute and interesting story that I could not put down. It was page-turner in itself and that made the story that much more enjoyable to read.

Bennett Langdon has had a rough live, not knowing her dad growing up, and losing her mother just recently has put a lot of pressure on her. Her view on relationships has changed because of that, but that hasn't stopped her from hooking up with a sexy stranger at her best friend's wedding. From the minute they met, they instantly connected which made their wedding encounter impossible for them to deny it any longer. After having too much to drink, Bennett makes Linc Monahan a deal, to spend the night together with no strings attached. It's a proposal that will be a win-win for the both of them, and after insisting, Linc gives in and they spend the night together. Too bad after they went their separate ways, Bennett finds out that she is pregnant. Knowing that she is going to have to tell Linc, she braces herself for what is coming and how that is going to change her life.

Linc was shocked when he found out that he was going to be a father, in his mind he knew that that couldn't possible, and he was determined to find out who Bennett really is. But as a werewolf he is set to protect, and the pull that he feels towards Bennett grows stronger as the two start to get to know each other better. Nevertheless, there are still other issues that they need to take care of and one of them being what he is going to tell Bennett about the supernatural world, and of the creatures that might put them in danger when they find out about the baby.

I really enjoyed reading this book a lot, it had a very interesting start, and the progression that we get to see as their relationship grows made the book entertaining to read as well. There were times when some aspects felt a bit rushed, and what I didn't like as much was the reaction that Bennett has when Linc tells her that he is a werewolf. I was expecting it to be a bit dramatic, but she took it really well. It didn't add any drama to the story, but at times it would have been better to have a bit more action to make it more interesting. The story pretty much revolves around the fact that Bennett might not be human after all, and Linc has to find out what she is in order to know how to protect them. It doesn't end well for them after they find out the big secret, but they are still determined to protect the baby.

On the other hand, there is the fact that neither of them want to admit that they are falling for each other due to previous experiences, and ultimately they have to learn to trust each other in order to make things work. In terms of their personalities, Bennett is outspoken and fun, whereas Linc is a bit more reserved and overprotective. It's a rather nice mix in characters that do work out in the end. I loved the very ending as well, it was sweet and left me wonder if we are going to get a separate story about their kid. From what we find out in the story, it seems like the baby's future could make a great story as well. I would definitely keep reading more, and I highly recommend reading this book. :)
