My Review:
Not having read any other works by Airicka Phoenix before, I wasn’t sure what to expect of Transcending Darkness. Needless to say I was impressed with the level of detail and creative plot twists and turns that had me reading non-stop. In Airicka Phoenix’s new book, we are taken to the world of those that work underground and whose power/control can either unite them or star a war between them.
As soon as the story begins we meet Juliette Romero, whose life has turned upside down when she lost her parents and had to become her younger sister’s guardian. Having always lived in luxury and richness, she did not expect to end up with nothing after her father decided to lose everything after her mother died. Now she has three jobs and no little time to sleep as she is desperately trying to pay the debt her father owned one of the underground lords. She knows that she will always be under his control, and she is willing to give all she has to keep her sister safe. Yet when she only has a day to pay a huge amount of money, her only resort is to give the last thing she has in order to get more time to pay the money she owes. The minute she is about to give herself to the very man that has caused her pain, an unexpected guest arrives to her rescue. One that will end up saving her and giving her so much more, including the freedom that she has always desired.
For Killian McClary power has always been with him ever since he can remember, it is practically in his blood, and knowing that he can never truly be free of the power that he holds it makes him think that he is destined to be alone. Known as the Scarlet Wolf, everyone sees Killian as a ruthless individual who is ready to hurt anyone that gets in his way. Yet after being known as a monster, nothing could have prepared him for what he saw the minute he sees his enemy mistreating a young women. Memories of what happened to his mother haunt him, and he is willing to protect Juliette no matter the cost. Little did he know that the more the two started to get to know each other, the more he would end up wanting to spend more time with her. And so he gives her the one thing she wants for something in return, a contract to be his for a year in return for her freedom of the man that caused her pain. It should have been an easy way to get something that he wanted, but soon things started to grow between them and it became clear that his feeling for Juliette were starting to grow into love.
From the very beginning it is clear that both characters have suffered a lot in their lives, both have lost their parents and they have been haunted by their memories. For Juliette, she has to keep things a secret from her secret in order to protect her. When Killian gives her the contract it sort of reminded me of Fifty Shades of Grey, it was an interesting thought. There were a couple scenes that were like that book, but not the whole idea if you know what I mean. Anyhow, in terms of Killian’s personality, he has to act in a way that would make him look powerful and ruthless. Yet when he is with Juliette or those that he cares about, he becomes the total opposite. He is kind and caring, overall the perfect hero in the story.
I really liked reading Transcending Darkness; the story was full with twists and turns. There were, however, things towards the ending where I wished the author could have explained the situation better. There was a scene at the end that had a lot implied, and that had me confused, yet it made sense later at the very end. It wasn’t a big deal, but it could have made the story so much better. Overall, the story was successful at the end; we do get character development in both characters but not as much. They do not necessarily change, but they do change their current situations for the better. The epilogue was sweet and it makes me wonder if we’re going to get a story from the secondary characters’ point of view. I still highly recommend it; I will definitely be reading more from the author in the future.
