Daylight streamed through the window. Billie rolled to her side to see Jesse’s side of the bed empty. She rubbed her eyes and stretched. A headache brewed just at the edges. She balled her fists. “No. Not again.”

She willed her mind to stop throbbing. It actually kind of helped. She walked downstairs and into the kitchen. She had hoped Jesse would be there, but he didn’t seem to be anywhere. She shrugged. She was determined to have a better day. Things didn’t feel like they used to anymore, and she would force it if she had to. Mind over matter, Billie. Mind over matter.

She walked to the French doors leading to the backyard. She peered through the door to survey the yard. The large maple trees that provided shade in the summer were losing their leaves. It was time to rake them. She rolled up her sleeves and got to work.

She heard a whistle and stopped.

“Mm-hmm, you look sexy out here, babe.”

Billie wiped the sweat from her brow. “If you mean a sweaty mess, then sure.”

Jesse chuckled. “Never.” He walked to her and forced the rake from her hand. He grabbed both hands and danced her around the piles of leaves.

She relaxed into his arms and smiled.

They stopped, and he twirled her. At the last spin, they launched into the largest pile of leaves, laughed and stared skyward.

Billie raised Jesse’s hand to her lips and gently kissed him. “Thanks. I needed that.”

He smiled. “Me too.” He tucked a stray hair behind her ear. “I meant what I said earlier. You look beautiful.”

She smiled. “Well, thanks. Wanna help?”

“I wouldn’t want to do anything else.” Jesse jumped to his feet then outstretched his hand to help Billie up. He grabbed the rake from the ground and raked the leaves they had dispersed in their fun.

Billie grabbed garbage bags and loaded the leaves, leaving a nice and tidy yard.

🌟 BOOK BLITZ 🌟 The Last Starling by C.L. Denault {EXCERPT + GIVEAWAY!}

The Last Starling by C.L. Denault

Release Date: December 24th 2019 by C.L. Denault
Pages: 438
Genres: Fantasy, Horror, Paranormal, Young Adult

“They’re coming.”

Words of warning haunt Jayce Wakefield’s dreams. He doesn’t believe them any more than he believes in the blue-eyed raven delivering the message. It’s totally absurd. They’re just dreams. He has nothing to worry about.

Or does he?

Jayce’s life revolves around three things: being a senior, worshipping a girl he can’t have, and killing vampires. As a werewolf, his job is to protect the Starling woods. That means taking out any bloodsucker who dares to cross the Boundary. And since his autistic brother can’t handle wolfing out, it’s up to Jayce to keep pack territory safe.

But between the dream-raven, humans going missing, and vampires acting weird, he’s losing his grip on reality. Add to that a runaway in his territory, and he welcomes the distraction. The fact that she won’t talk about herself makes him obsessed with learning about her past. The deeper he digs, though, the more she withdraws. It’s not until her life is threatened that he discovers the truth. Who she is. Why she’s there.

And the sinister darkness headed for them both.

{EXCERPT}

In the very center is our cage. Round, tall, and wide, made of thick steel bars. Built to withstand several hundred pounds of raging werewolf. Or in this case, a skinny-ass vampire.

It’s sitting cross-legged on the concrete. No robe, raven mask, or gloves. Gramps must have had it stripped, because it’s down to a ragged pair of briefs. Makes sense. The more skin exposed, the more vulnerable it will be to sunlight.

“Jayce.” My dad’s in a folding chair off to the side, several feet from the cage. There’s a coffee thermos in his hand and a magazine in his lap. “You shouldn’t be down here.”

“I had to see it,” I say, stepping closer to the cage. The Trespasser doesn’t move a muscle. It’s male—or was, before it turned—and thin as a whip. White, papery skin. Spotty facial hair. Red-rimmed eyes with purple smudges underneath.

Sadly, it reminds me of Connor.

The magazine falls to the floor as Dad gets up. “Go upstairs.”

“Just one look. Please.”

He hesitates, probably considering what Gramps would say if he knew I was down here. Walking over to me, his eyes scan my bare chest and legs. “You all healed up?”

“Yeah. A little dizzy from the adrenaline, but I’m good.”

“You took a huge risk out there.” He’s using his dad voice, not his Beta voice, so I’m safe. “Going face-first for the chest? Not smart.”

“I know.”

“Always attack from the rear. Or the side.”

“I know, Dad.”

He frowns. “You obviously don’t. That thing almost gutted you. Staying in wolf form will heal gouges, but spilled intestines are a different story. You could have died.”

“I’m sorry,” I say quietly, and as Dad opens his mouth to respond, I hurry to add, “I didn’t have a choice. Aiden was hurt, and it was trying to kill him. I had to stop it.”

“You’re a firstborn. You can’t risk—”

“My life?” I cut in. “What’s life without my pack? I can’t be an Alpha someday if there’s no one to lead. I did it for all of us—and not blindly. I knew I could take that thing down.”

“How?”

“I just knew. In my gut. So I went for it.”

Dad doesn’t respond. For a long moment, he stares at me in disapproval. Then his frown becomes a smile. Small, but pleased. He puts his hand on my shoulder.

“You fought bravely, son. Aiden owes you his life, and we all owe you our gratitude.” His smile widens. “I’m very proud of you.”

Smiling back, I let his words sink in. The words of a Beta, the future leader of our pack. They both soothe and heal me. They’re what I wanted—no, needed—to hear and are worth every injury.

“Thanks, Dad,” I say.

He squeezes my shoulder, and the hitch in my chest comes back. I fight it off by turning my gaze on the Trespasser. It still hasn’t moved. Maybe it knows it’s facing its demise. Or maybe it’s just listening. Good.

I’ll plant some fear.

“What’s going to happen to it?” I ask my dad.

“I don’t know. That’s up to our”—he gives me a warning look—“Alpha.”

“Right.” I say it in a way that lets him know I catch his drift. Our piss patrol is an effort to make the Trespassers believe Gramps is still actively patrolling the Starling. They fear the pack, but they fear him most of all. He leads us, teaches us strategy. Here, on our land, what he says goes. The thing in the cage believes that.

We can’t let it think any different.

I take a step toward it. Then another. It doesn’t move, so I walk as close I dare. When I get within a few feet, it lunges. Fast, a blur through the air, its arm reaching through the bars.

Just as fast, I duck. Grab its arm and twist.

It drops to its knees, hissing.

Turns its black eyes on me.

I give it a quick, hard smile. Whatever Gramps has planned for this thing, I hope it hurts. I want it to suffer—horribly, like the helpless, unsuspecting humans it feeds on. I want to watch it die with its mouth locked open in terror.

Like Cathy.

It hisses again. Glares at me. My smile widening, I lean in close to it, breathing in its cold, nauseating scent. Then I tell it what I think about every single Trespasser that dares cross my path.

“You are so dead.”

🌟BOOK BLITZ:🌟 Shantallow by Cara Martin {EXCERPT + GIVEAWAY!}

Shantallow by Cara Martin

Release Date: May 26th 2019
Genres: Horror, Young Adult

Tanvi isn’t the girl of Misha’s dreams; she’s the girl from his nightmares. She has appeared in his chilling dreams before he even meets her; when he DOES meet her, he falls for her.

Their relationship turns stormy, bordering on abusive, and takes a dramatic turn when they are held captive by a group hoping to extract money from Tanvi’s wealthy family.

But there is something more sinister at work, and the kidnappers and their victims find themselves struggling for survival as a supernatural force from Misha’s nightmares makes itself known in the real world.

{EXCERPT}

When I come to, I’m lying face down on hard plastic, my eyes blinking back gritty tears and blood and stomach pain twisting me into a fetal position. My hands want to fly to my abdomen, to protect it from something that’s already happened, but they can’t. They’re frozen behind my back. I thrash around like a fish out of water, my mouth gone like a horror movie creature — solid flesh where the opening should be.

“Easy,” a male voice tells me. “You’re not going anywhere.”

“Maybe he can’t breathe with his nose fucked up like that,” a second guy suggests.

My head flips frenziedly back and forth, my nostrils inhaling clots where oxygen should be and the world sliding away from me while I plummet toward something else.

“Hold still,” one of them growls, yanking the fleshy covering from my mouth. I splutter and cough, then gulp down air. I’ve barely filled my lungs when something smacks my lips. Wriggling and heaving I sit myself up like an old man, breathing raggedly against whatever they’ve used to reseal my mouth — layers of duct tape, probably. I can almost see its silver gleam, and I keep fluttering my eyelashes, fighting off the onslaught of wet, but it’s like driving through a monsoon without windshield wipers. Nearly impossible.

They’ve left a small hole in the center of the tape this time; a fine stream of air seeps in where my lips part. I’m not going to drown in my own blood in the back of a stranger’s van.

Shifting my weight, I accidentally knock against the figure next to me, who nearly topples me with a shove to the shoulder. I regain my balance before I hit the floor, knees forming a tent in front of me and my hands scraping against plastic behind them. My brain’s skipping double dutch, overclocking as my vision finally begins to clear.

White Kia. Utility van with whited-out rear windows. Men in ski masks.

They kidnapped Tanvi and whoever else was at the Mahajan house, including me. They thought I saw one of their faces. In truth I didn’t see anything, but being in the van is the better case scenario. Better than being left behind. But where are they taking us? The ski mask floating close to me is the first thing to come partially into focus. White skin around the eye and mouth holes. The guy’s gripping something in one of his hands, his posture tense. Tanvi’s furthest away from me, but she’s the one I see next. Sitting cross-legged, hazy brown legs disappearing into volleyball shoes. Hair hanging in her face, partially obscuring the slash of duct tape over her mouth, and her body swaying slightly from the movement of the van.

I count all the figures inside the vehicle. Two guys in the front seat, one of them at the wheel and the other in the passenger seat, both of them in baseball hats and all-black clothing. Another two are crouching among us in the back of the van, one with white skin under his mask and the other black, each of them cradling a gun. Four abductees total: a young white girl who can’t be much older than ten, Tanvi, me, and a black guy about our age with a grown-out buzz cut whose chin and neck are smeared with red. He must have tried to fight off the kidnappers too. His face is vaguely familiar, and when he stares pointedly back at me his eyes are beaming a message.

Leslie clung to him, wishing they were outside. “What is this place?”

“The cells.” Derek kept his voice low.

She squeezed his bicep. “I’ve never been inside The Abbey.” Leslie peered into the dim, cavernous corridor ahead, with only patches of light coming through the thick stone walls. “I wish we hadn’t come.”

“It will be fine, I promise.” He patted her hand. “Nothing will hurt you. I won’t let it.”

They crept along, their feet hitting sticks and fallen pieces of plaster from the crumbling walls around them. Puddles of water dotted the uneven stone floor and dampened Leslie’s tennis shoes. Mounds of dead leaves lay swept to the side. The low ceiling had roots coming through it, and the walls were cold and slimy to the touch. Derek shined his flashlight into the first room on the left. It was a depressingly small space composed of four walls and no windows.

It reminded Leslie of a jail cell rather than a place where a person would choose to live.

Scraps of paper littered the ground of the next cell they came across; another had a rusty metal frame of a bed. Several of the rooms had cracks in their plaster ceilings along with patches of mold. When they stumbled on a few rat skeletons, Leslie turned her head into Derek’s shoulder.

At the end of the passageway, sunlight snuck through a break in the wall. The intrusion of light was a welcome sight and Leslie’s fear abated. The jagged opening allowed green leaves from the plants outside to reach in, and a few creeping vines jutted up toward the ceiling. Along the floor, a thick pile of dead leaves hid the lower part of the opening.

“There was a cave-in along the wall here.” Derek brushed the leaves aside, revealing a fairly large breach able to accommodate one person at a time. “The other cells past this point are too dangerous to explore. We can get out here and avoid going back through The Abbey.”

Derek turned off his flashlight and handed it to her. He pushed the leaves back, pulled the vines down, and kicked the debris at the bottom away, trying to clear the opening.

While he worked, a glimmering light from inside one of the cells farther down the corridor distracted her. She flipped on the flashlight and angled it into the tight quarters beyond the cave-in.

The walls in this portion of the cells had deeper cracks than the rest of the structure. The fissures ran along the entire ceiling and down to the floors. Patches of black mold were everywhere. What struck her as odd was the lack of debris. It appeared as if it had been freshly swept without any leaves or rat skeletons littering the ground.

Derek came up behind her. “What are you doing?”

Leslie headed toward the room where she’d spotted the strange light. “I saw something.”

The smell of rot and mold filled her nose. Her skin brushed against the slimy walls, and she cringed. But something compelled her to keep going into the section Derek had deemed too dangerous to explore.

“Leslie, stop.”

Naturally, she ignored him and pressed on, testing the floor with the toe of her shoe as she carefully progressed. Her heartbeat kicked up a notch, but this time a tingling sensation of excitement went with it. She felt like Indiana Jones exploring a lost tomb and waiting for a booby trap to jump out at her.

Her beam of light filtered into the room, and her heart crept higher in her throat. She rounded the edge of the wall and halted.

The cell was small without any windows, but this room appeared lived in. Along the far wall, below a pair of rusted pipes where a sink had once been, a green cot—army issue—had a pillow and green blanket neatly stacked on top. At the foot of the cot was a blue ice chest; on top of it, an assortment of red and white candles.

Leslie went up to the cot and caressed the blanket and pillows. Her foot tapped something beneath. She bent down and discovered an old CD player.

What’s this?

Footfalls came from behind her. She swerved the flashlight around to Derek, fuming.

“Did you do this?”

“Do what?” He shielded his eyes from the light and stepped inside.

She wanted to believe he had no idea any of this was here, but her suspicions couldn’t be silenced. The whole scenario seemed so well-planned.

“What the hell?” Derek came up to the cot and lifted the pillow.

She stood back, studying his reaction as he browsed the contents of the room. “I thought you said this portion was dangerous.”

“It is.”

🌟BOOK BLITZ:🌟 Painless by Marty Thornley {EXCERPT + GIVEAWAY!}

Painless by Marty Thornley

Release Date: January 12th 2018
Pages: 285
Genres: Adult, Horror, Psychological Thriller

What readers are saying...

"...most definitely a recommended read, though it's probably not the best choice for those with a weak stomach."

"Gruesome and twisted. Awesome!!!"

"OMG this book. Holy heck the gruesome descriptions of blood and gore and guts was SO RAD. I found myself cringing and fidgeting and yes, even feeling a bit nauseous in some spots - but totally in a GOOD WAY! Painless was exactly what I wanted in a super-unique, creepy, shocking horror-thriller."

About the Book...

The debut psychological-horror novel from author Marty Thornley is a page-turning ride, a front row seat to a clinical trial gone horribly wrong.

For Greg Owens, this was supposed to be a chance to end years of back pain and escape his reliance on pain pills. If it all worked out, he could maybe even get back the life he left behind as the pills took control.

Instead, as the patients are cured of their physical pain, they encounter a different sort of pain building inside them – obsessive thoughts, depression, self-destruction. The side-effects grow worse, and the suspense ratchets tighter. The patients want answers and violent revenge, setting them on a collision course with a crazed doctor, determined to protect his life's obsession.

{EXCERPT}

AUTHOR BIO:

Marty started writing short stories as a teenager, inspired as much by favorite books and movies as the environment and characters that define the South Shore of Massachusetts. The pull of the movies dragged him first to film school and finally to Los Angeles, where he poked at the outskirts of the industry with screenplays and short films.

As his interest in a film career fizzled, he rebuilt himself bit-by-bit as a programmer. He spent the next decade building websites, finally realizing that something had been lost. His stories were collecting dust in the back of his brain while he sat through conference calls and code reviews.

So he returned to the woods of New England and the calming darkness under the trees. He returned to find the things that crawl in the undergrowth and turn them into words on the page. He dusted off one of his screenplays and turned it into his first novel. In the process, a dormant storyteller was awakened and is now seeking the next blank page to fill.
