“You shouldn’t be here.” Her voice was flat, a careful monotone.

He locked down a flinch. That even, cautious tone was another departure from the free living, expressive spirit she’d been back then.

“We need to talk,” he said, channeling that same flat monotone.

“There’s nothing to talk about.” She backed up a pace, as though she were about to slam the door in his face.

“Then you can listen.” He stuck his foot in the doorframe and locked down every ounce of emotion. “Look, I’m not here to get you back, okay? That ship sailed a long time ago. But you used to be a friend, and you’re about to make a big mistake. That’s something I can’t walk away from.”

“This isn’t your business.” The skin around her eyes tightened.

“I’m making it my business.” He forced the next words out, all too aware that the bearer of bad news was usually the one skewered and strung. “You don’t know what you’re getting into. Mitch isn’t the guy you think he is.”

“I know exactly the kind of man he is.” She contradicted him, her voice even tighter than before.

“Do you?” Tag asked grimly. “Then you know your loving fiancΓ© is fishing at the BU and taking a new catch home every night?”

Something slipped through her eyes. But it wasn’t pain. It was more calculating than that.

“I don’t care.”

Tag rocked back on his heels. She didn’t care? That didn’t sound like the Sarah he’d known.

She must have seen the surprise on his face, because she leaned forward slightly, her voice dropping with intensity. “Look, nothing you say is going to change my mind. Nothing. Just go.”

He shook his head, disoriented. Could she really have changed that much over the course of two years? The Sarah he’d been in love with would never have put up with Mitch’s bullshit. Not if she’d known about it. The Sarah he’d loved had too much pride for that.

With a lift of his eyebrows, he cocked his head, studying her. Every freckle stood out like flecks of gold on her white face. He regrouped, frowning. There was something off here. Way off.

Genres: Adult, Romance, Suspense

In the final novel in the scorching Red-Hot SEALs series, a desperate mother and a Navy SEAL fight fire with fire to protect their love and save the world…

Amy Chastain has made a lot of enemies—none so ruthless as the insanely powerful New Ruling Order (NRO). When they killed her husband, it was hell. Then they targeted her children by injecting them with a dangerous, experimental isotope. Now Amy trusts only one man to help her: the ex-commander of SEAL Team 7.

In the company of Navy SEALs, Jace “Mac” Mackenzie was in his physical element. Now he’s on the run from the same cabal that poisoned Amy’s children. That doesn’t stop him from launching a mission to bring down the NRO—and find an antidote. But the clock is ticking. And as the sparks fly between him and Amy, Mac realizes he has more to lose than ever before.

As Mac closes in on the NRO, he uncovers a plot that threatens more than Amy’s children. Now it’s a race against time to stop a global conspiracy, save the woman he loves, and protect the family that’s starting to feel like his.

“You can talk to him after you’ve eaten, Benji. Now skedaddle.” She waited for Brendan to herd his brother across the cafeteria floor before turning a suddenly grave face in Mac’s direction. “The boys’ doctor asked to see Amy in private, and I suspect the news is less than good. Nobody should have to face something like that alone, but she needed help with the boys, so I couldn’t stay.”

Ah hell . . . Stiffening, Mac took a step back. “Beth or Kait—”

“Aren’t here. You are. The meeting with the doctor will be over by the time I find them. Amy needs someone now.”

Mac took another step back. “I’m sure Mrs. Chastain would prefer to have a woman with her.”

“The only woman available is me, and I promised her I’d take care of her children. Trust me, she’d be much more comfortable with me watching over her boys than holding her hand. Which means you’re currently the only person available to step up.” She leaned toward him, a militant look sheening her gaze.

Fuck.

“She’s at the clinic, Commander. Alone. She needs you.” The resolve shifted to entreaty in her eyes and voice.

Double fuck.

He spread his feet and tensed his muscles, powering up for an uncompromising refusal. No way in hell was he taking on Amy Chastain’s troubles.

“Fine.” The surrender grated as it rumbled up his throat and out his mouth.

Where the hell had that come from?

Mac scowled, regrouping. Time to nip this in the bud and retreat to safety. “Look, I’ll check in on her. That’s all I’m promising.”

He groaned beneath his breath. Agreeing to check up on the damn woman wasn’t exactly retreating.

Marion’s expression softened in relief. “I’m sure she’ll appreciate that, Commander.”

Grunting an acknowledgment, Mac brushed past Marion before she talked him into doing anything else. Of course, just because he’d agreed to check on Amy didn’t mean he had to do so. It would be easy enough to skirt that duty by heading in the opposite direction. Except his feet developed a mind of their own and carried him two streets to the right and through the clinic’s sliding glass doors.

Rio pushed back his desk chair, and stretched his tight shoulders and back. Hunched over that desk all day played hell with his muscles. “Who’s on the jacket?”

“Rachel Blaine. You gonna check into it? The daughter is waiting in the lobby.”

Rachel Blaine…Blaine…

Becca’s last name had been Blaine…and her mother had committed suicide… could it be… He did the math. Becca had been living with Adam’s family for four years by that summer twelve years ago, which would put her mother’s death around sixteen years ago.

So yeah, this could be her mother’s case.

“What’s the name of the daughter?” Rio forced a casual tone.

“Rebecca Blaine. From Olympia. She says she found her mother’s diary and from the entries, there’s no way the woman killed herself.”

So, it was Becca. And she was right around the corner and down the hall.

Rio sat perfectly still, his pulse and breathing accelerating as an exotic face with dark, slightly titled eyes took shape in his mind. A flash fire of heat hit his blood, rippling out through his muscles, which infuriated him. Damnit, he was not still hung up on the woman. That entire fuck up had happened twelve years ago. He’d shaken that itch way before he’d left SEAL Team 7, and joined the San Diego Police department.

This jolt to his nervous system was curiosity, that’s all. At one point, back in his twenties, Becca Blaine had been an obsession, a craving that had fucked with his head. It was natural to wonder how the years had treated her.

It was also natural, considering what a little troublemaker she’d been, for suspicion to rise. What was she up to? Knowing Becca, there had to be some deeper manipulation at work.
