Waiting on Wednesday (#31)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

Apartment 16

by
Expected publication: November 1st 2013 by Pan Macmillan
Some doors are better left closed—a spine-chilling horror novel from a new talent

In Barrington House, an upmarket block in London, there is an empty apartment. No one goes in and no one comes out, and it's been that way for 50 years, until the night a watchman hears a disturbance after midnight and is drawn to investigate. What he experiences is enough to change his life forever. Soon after, a young American woman, Apryl, arrives at Barrington House. She's been left an apartment by her mysterious Great Aunt Lillian who died in strange circumstances. Rumors claim Lillian was mad, but her diary suggests she was implicated in a horrific and inexplicable event decades ago. Determined to learn something of this eccentric woman, Apryl begins to unravel the hidden story of Barrington House. She discovers that a transforming, evil force still inhabits the building, and that the doorway to Apartment 16 is a gateway to something altogether more terrifying.

Geek Girls Don't Date Dukes (Geek Girls #2)

by

Leah Ramsey has always loved historical romance novels and dressing in period costumes. So when she has a chance to time travel and experience the history for herself, she jumps at it—figuring it can't be too hard to catch the eye of a duke. After all, it happens all the time in her novels.

Avery Russell, valet and prize pugilist, reluctantly helps Leah gain a position in the Duke of Granville's household . . . as a maid.

Domestic servitude wasn't exactly what she had in mind, but she's determined to win her happily ever after. Even if the hero isn't exactly who she's expecting.

                           ADD TO GOODREADS

My Teaser:

"Avery?" The question was whispered, her eyes soft and confused as she looked up at him. He let his actions answer. Bending low, he pressed his lips to hers.

Soft heat. That was the sensation of her mouth on his. His muscles trembled with the effort of holding himself still, of restraining the urge to draw her body tight against his and posses her completely. This was enough. It was more than he deserved and all he'd ever get. She was leaving here, leaving him, forever." (pg. 148)

*I absolutely love this book, I can't wait to read the ending! :) Let me what your Teaser Tuesday is in the comments below and I'll make sure to check it out. Review: Isn't She Lovely by Lauren Layne

Isn't She Lovely
by Lauren Layne
Released Date: Published October 28th 2013 by Flirt
Pages: 240
View/Purchase: Goodreads, Amazon, B&N

“Who knew that pretending you’re not falling for someone would be so much more difficult than pretending that you are?”

Stephanie Kendrick gave up her whole summer to ace her NYU film school screenwriting course, so she’s pissed to be stuck with a preppy, spoiled frat boy as her writing partner. Then again, with her piercings, black-rimmed eyes, and Goth wardrobe, Stephanie isn’t exactly Ethan Price’s type, either. He’s probably got his eye on some leggy blonde with a trust fund . . . or does he?

As the summer scene kicks off in the Hamptons, Ethan is desperate to make his snobbish mother forget the pedigreed girl who broke his heart. While Stephanie’s a stretch as a decoy, the right makeover and a pastel cardigan just might do the trick. She may not love the idea of playing Ethan’s brainless Barbie girlfriend, but the free rent and luxurious digs make a tempting offer. So does the promise of a ready-made screenplay idea inspired by their charade.

But when Stephanie steps into Ethan’s privileged world, the “acting” begins to feel all too real. The kissing and touching that were intended to fool the Hamptons crowd wind up manipulating them. And Stephanie faces a question she’s too afraid to ask: Is Ethan falling for the real her or for the dolled-up princess he wants to see?

(Synopsis taken from Goodreads)

My Review:

I absolutely love this book so much, I finished it in a day. The overall concept of the book had me wanting for more! When Stephanie Kendrick spends her summer taking a film class at NYU, she wasn't expecting to have Ethan, a rich preppy boy, as her writing partner. They are total opposites, but they somehow get along after telling each other off. Ethan is tired of having his parents on his back all the time after ending his previous relationship, he enrolls in film class just as an excuse to escape from them for the summer. But he wasn't expecting to find himself spending time with Stephanie, the goth-girl. Having no topic to write about, he suggests her to pretend to be his girlfriend for the purposes of the project and to get his parents off his back. All they have to do is pretend that they love each other for a couple of family events and in return Stephanie can stay at his condo rent-free for the rest of the summer. It sounds good to be true, but what happens when they soon stop pretending, what are they going to do then?

I think this book is great, it had a very good start and it had me loving every part of it to the end. Opposites attract would be the better words to describe this book. Although there are a lot of books with the same idea, this book became a page-turner for me. I kept reading it until the very end, and I wasn't disappointed at all. The ending had me laughing and loving those two characters so much, especially Ethan, he is definitely a heartthrob. I recommend everyone to give this book a try, you will not regret it at all.

Thrown into a world unlike their own, they must quickly adapt to survive.

(Synopsis taken from Goodreads)

My Review:

I still don't know how I feel about this book. I haven't read other dystopian books before, so this didn't leave a good impression on me. The premise of the story had me wanting to read it for a while, and the cover was a plus. What I did like was the overall idea, it was great, but how it was executed throughout the book was not my favorite part. I was disappointed at the end, because I was already expecting so much of this book. I felt that the very beginning had potential, but it all happened so fast that it left me with questions rather than answers. Following her eighteenth birthday, Olivia Parker accepts her requirement to marry her childhood best friend, Joshua Warren. She is excited to start her new life, but she gets arrested and thrown in prison. The only crime committed, her existence. Lost and confused, she finds out what is unique about her and because of that, she is forced to run for her life. Joshua helps her escape, and together they embark in a new adventure full of surprises and danger. But the more they learn about their surroundings, the more they question whether or not they are safe or not. They have each other, but is that enough to save one another?

There were times in the book that had me thinking and very intrigued, but it wasn't for me. I wished there could have been more details to the story. The ending was good, it had a good transition to lead to the next book. I don't think I'm going to read the next book any time soon, but if I do, I hope it's a lot better. Overall, the story lacked execution, and details. The ending is promising, so I recommend this book to those that like dystopian books.

Series: Second Chances #1

View/Purchase: Goodreads, Amazon, B&N

Korinne Anders had it all. She had the perfect job, the perfect house, and the perfect husband. When tragedy strikes, her world takes a devastating turn. Six months after losing her husband to a car accident, Korinne vows it to herself never to love again. If she doesn’t allow another man in her heart, then there’s no reason for her to feel the pain of loss. This plan seems to work, but is put to the test when Korinne’s best friend can’t stand to see her suffering any longer.

Korinne’s long-time friend, Jenna Perry, has an idea and it involves helping her friend find the spark of life in her soul no matter what it takes. Korinne didn’t know that Jenna’s plan meant bringing back a past love, a second chance with the man that Korinne had to leave in college, but always kept a place for in her heart.

When Galen Matthews learns of Korinne’s loss and that she’s finally moved back home, he wants nothing more than to be there for her. The love he felt for Korinne years ago has never left him, and now he’s given a second chance to not only mend her heart of her loss, but to also continue the love they shared in the past. Will his love and determination make her strong enough to give fate a second chance, or will her fear of losing another love make her run away?

What will Korinne do when she’s faced with a love so powerful that no matter what she does there’s nowhere to run from it?

(Synopsis taken from Goodreads)

My Review:

This book had me reading for hours! I absolutely love it, from the start to the very end. L.P. Dover did an amazing job creating a book filled with twists that had me guessing the ending. It's definitely an emotional rollercoaster ride. Korinne had everything she ever wanted in her life, but one day tragedy strikes and her husband dies in a car accident. Filled with grieve, she moves back to her old town and decides to spend time alone to get herself back together. But just when she thought her life was taking turns for the worst, her best friend Jenna comes in to rescue her by taking her to a party where she sees non other than her ex-college boyfriend. What Korinne didn't know was that her friend was already making matchmaking plans. Having a history together, Korinne embarks into a new adventure when she starts seeing Galen (only as friends), but things soon start heating up and the two can no longer hide what they're feeling inside. With that said, Korinne will have to make a choice whether or not to move on with her life with Galen or grieve the lose of her husband and stick to her old life.

There are a lot of choices that Korinne has to make throughout the book that make her vulnerable, she seems to be not ready to have a future with Galen and that's a tough choice to make. Whereas Galen is one those characters that are just so kind and is willing to do just about anything for her. I enjoyed reading their moments together, the writing made those scenes stand out from the rest of the story. There were also times when the book had me guessing, and the ending twists! I couldn't stop reading without finding out what was going to happen next. Overall, the story made it to my favorite's list and I recommend everyone to read it, you will not regret it.

Review: Where My Heart Breaks by Ivy Sinclair

Where My Heart Breaks
by Ivy Sinclair
Released Date: Published August 29th 2013 by Smith Sinclair Books
Pages: 182
View/Purchase: Goodreads, Amazon, B&N

If there were a course in screwing up your life, Kate Spivey would get an A+.

Trust is in short supply for Kate at the start of the summer before her senior year of college. Her parents sentenced her to spend it under the watchful eye of her aunt at the famous Willoughby Inn. It was further proof that she was a prisoner in, and not the decision maker of, her life. Nothing she does is good enough to prove that she learned from the mistakes of her past.

Almost immediately, Kate finds that her new summer home holds another person who understands the unfairness of her situation better than most. Reed Black has had his own share of tragedy and regrets, but instead of trying to fight his reputation, he embraced it.

Sparks fly between Kate and Reed, but his mixed signals remind Kate that she needs to watch her step. He is one temptation she can't afford to indulge in, no matter how strong her attraction to him. If she isn't careful, she'll lose more than her heart.

(Synopsis taken from Goodreads)

My Review:

Where My Heart Breaks is the story of Kate and Reed, and their struggles to finding a fresh start in their lives. When Kate is sent to move with her aunt for the summer, she thought things couldn't get worse. Having made the wrong decisions in the past, she is sent away to start a fresh start. But she also wasn't expecting to find such history at the famous Willoughby Inn. She is just there to please her parents, but it becomes so much more when she meets Reed Black. Their first encounter came as a surprise, but she finds out rather quickly that Reed is trouble and she can't have that if she is going to go back to her home/school. What she thought was going to be the worst summer, ends up being a summer filled with adventures and hot scenes with Reed Black. She knows she is digging her own grave if she keeps seeing Reed, but the more time she spends with him, the more she wants him. With this she'll have to decide what is truly important in her life and whether or not she is ready to have a fresh start.

One of the things that I liked about this book is just how certain scenes are unexpected. Kate's life is filled with regrets and the last thing she wants is to ruined her life. With her parents sending her away, she becomes strong and completely vulnerable (specially when it comes to Reed Black). It makes her a great character, and Reed is so kind and sweet. I like how protective he gets when he is around her. They both have a past, but ultimately they have the power to decide whether they want to move forward or keep their past alive. I found myself connecting with the characters and their stories, the writing flowed perfectly and that's what made it a great book. I can't say enough good things about this book without spoiling it, but I recommend this book to anyone that wants a unique and romantic book.

ARC Review: Million Dollar Christmas Proposal by Lucy Monroe

Million Dollar Christmas Proposal
by Lucy Monroe
Release Date: Expected publication: October 22nd 2013 by Harlequin
Pages: 256
View/Purchase: Goodreads, Amazon, B&N

Two people need the most amazing holiday miracle of all: love.

Enzu is determined to offer his orphaned niece and nephew the family he’d craved but never known, even if he has to pay a few million for a “loving mother.”

Audrey learns of her CEO’s crazy scheme and sees it as an opportunity to provide the high end education her brilliant brother deserves. Besides, she knows you can’t buy love and those orphaned children deserve better than the women Vincenzo Tomasi is going to draw with his multi-million dollar offer.

(Synopsis taken from Goodreads)

My Review:

All Enzu wanted was a “loving mother” for his orphaned niece and nephew, but he wasn't expecting to find love in none other than someone working for him, Audrey. Audrey is desperate to find a solution to her financial problem, so when she learns that her CEO is looking for a “mother” for his niece and nephew, she is determined to teach him that he can't buy love for the two orphaned children. As these two start to spend time together, they learn the meaning of family and most of all, love.

From the very beginning, I was immediately pulled into the story, it's fast-paced and very entertaining. I enjoy reading both characters' back stories, it made the story that much more enjoyable to read. The author did a good job describing the story and tying all of the events together in the end. Although it seems like a Christmas story (from the cover), it is not. At least not until the very end, which I was completely fine with. Enzu is your typical tycoon trying to pay for whatever he wants and he is not stopping until he gets it. On the other hand, Audrey is caring and she has given up a lot of things to protect her brother. She is strong and independent women that made me connect with her even more. Overall, if you are looking for a good romance novel that is fast-paced and with a great ending I would recommend everyone to give this book a try.

Waiting on Wednesday (#30)

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

Cinderella Screwed Me Over

by
Expected publication: October 22nd 2013 by Entangled Publishing
Darby Quinn has a bone to pick with Cinderella. Burned one too many times by ex-boyfriends, Darby has lost all belief in the happily-ever-after that the fairy-tale princess promised her. She's sworn off love, Prince Charmings, and happy endings and she's happy about it. Really. Or at least she was…until she met Jake, her gorgeous neighbor and the manager of her favorite restaurant. But Darby has rules about dating, ones she's culled from her years spent with so-called “princes,” and starting something with Jake would break all of them.

Charming, fun, and unwilling to give up on her, Jake doesn’t fit any of the profiles Darby has created from her case studies of ex-princes-gone-bad. Finally presented with her own Prince Charming, can Darby take a chance on a happily-ever-after?

Full of wit and sarcastic humor, Cinderella Screwed Me Over proves that sometimes the perfect love, like a perfect pair of shoes, is just within your grasp.

"I don't want to overstep the boundaries you have, but I've missed this. I've missed the way you feel in my arms." His warm breath tickled along my neck, sending goose bumps down the whole expanse of my body. He pulled back slightly from the embrace, and in my heart I wanted to protest. When I didn't respond, he asked softly, "Do you not have anything to say about that?"

"I'm not sure what to say," I whispered.

"You'll know soon."

Surprising me, he laid a soft, gentle kiss upon my cheek before releasing his arms around my waist. He made sure to let his fingers linger a little longer than normal on my hips. I smirked at him to let him know I caught it, and he smiled in response." (Pg. 42-43)

With one disastrous marriage behind him Cesare vows never to go there again. But when his indiscretion with Emma has consequences, Cesare must break his own vow—and say I do for the sake of his heir. Now he'll expect his new bride to share his bed, instead of making it!

(Synopsis taken from Goodreads)

My Review:

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was fast-paced with a lot of romantic moments that had unable to put the book down. Emma Hayes is your typical hard-working person, she strives to do well for herself and it's independent. But she wasn't expecting to get pregnant by none another than her boss, billionaire Cesare Falconeri. Tensions raise when she finds out that she is carrying the baby of someone that doesn't believe in neither marriage or kids. On the other hand, Cesare is handsome billionaire that believes he can get whatever he wants because of his status in society. But he wasn't expecting to like his house keeper so much to the point of keeping him awake at night, just thinking on the night that they both had. Desire sparks within him that he can't control and it's up to him to let go of his past in order to accept what he has in the present with Emma.

The story is well-written and fast-paced that it's almost impossible to put it away. I loved Cesare's personality, the things he does to get what he wants at any cost. The both of them keep the story alive and exciting. The author does a very good job leading to the events and tying them all in the end. Overall, the story is great. It's your typical romance story with a twist. I would really recommend everyone to give this book a try.

Review: Captivated (Adam & Ella #1) by Emily Jane Trent

Captivated
by Emily Jane Trent
Released Date: Published August 6th 2013 by Camden Lee Press, LLC
Series: Adam & Ella #1
Pages: 215
View/Purchase: Goodreads, Amazon, B&N

Ella Walker, still suffering from issues of mental abuse, turns twenty-one and meets the man of her dreams. Can she break the bonds of her emotional prison and be the woman he desires? As an aspiring romance author, Ella struggles to find passion in her work. When Adam Bianci, the gorgeous Italian billionaire appears in her life, he lights up her drab existence. She’s determined not to let him slip through her grasp. But will his secrets and the tangled web of his own abuse keep them apart?

(Synopsis taken from Goodreads)

My Review:

Adam and Ella's story is rather fast and complicated. They both have suffered in their childhood and it's because of their past that makes it complicated for them to move forward. Their was an instant connection when they first met that drives them crazy for one other throughout the book. It all seemed like a fantasy, yet it felt rushed to me. There were times when I felt frustrated getting to know the characters and with zero development in the story, it made the story incomplete.

Ella Walker has always wanted to be a fictional romance writer, but it's her past troubles that often get in the way. She has a terrible relationship with her mother and she barely talks to her or her sister. One of the things that helps her is writing in her diary, which she does constantly in the book. It's her way of expressing herself. She lives with her friend, Kaiyla, which is the completely opposite of her. She is a lot more outgoing, whereas Ella isn't much.

Adam Bianci is a software genius. He has had the talent to make new computer software since he was just a kid, but his father abused his talent and made himself rich not caring about Adam at all, but about what he was capable of doing. Adam grew up in a dysfunctional home, but he had his mother and sister when he needed them the most.

Both characters seem to be captivated with one another, it all seemed like a Romeo and Juliet kind of romance (without the ending part), it's just love at first sight for them. I really liked the overall idea of the story, it had potential to be great, but I found it too rushed. It was evident that they liked each other, but they kept going around in circles. Ella is a character that is constantly insecure and without any growth. Adam's past was revealed, but it ended the story with a cliffhanger (which I hate). The writing was all right, (poetic without any emotion at all). Overall, I'm giving this book a 3/5 rating, I will try to read the second one to see if it's any better, but not any time soon.

Review: Popping the Cherry by Aurelia B. Rowl

Popping the Cherry
by Aurelia B. Rowl
Released Date: Published September 19th 2013 by Carina
Pages: ebook250
View/Purchase: Goodreads, Amazon,

You only get one first time . . .

From driving tests to relationships, Valentina Bell thinks she’s a failure, with a big fat capital F. At this rate, she’s certain she’ll be a virgin for ever. So Lena’s friends plan Operation: Popping the Cherry to help her find the perfect man first time.

Yet somehow disastrous dates with bad-boy musicians and fabulous evenings with secretly in-the-closet guys aren’t quite working out how Lena planned.

Soon Lena’s avoiding Operation: Popping the Cherry to spend time with comforting, aloof Jake, her best friend’s older brother, who doesn’t make her feel self-conscious about still clinging to her V card. But could Jake show Lena that sometimes what you’re looking for most is right by your side?

A FOREVER for the twenty-first century.

(Synopsis taken from Goodreads)

My Review:

Popping the Cherry was a humorous and fun read. I felt that I really got to know the characters really well and it was a page-turner! I couldn't put it down, especially in those scenes with Valentina (Lena) and Jake. Aside from that, I felt that the book was very well-written and developed.

The subject of losing her virginity becomes the center attention when Lena's friends come up with Operation: Popping the Cherry, which lists candidates that she could potentially lose her v-card to without any attachments. Lena has always felt left out when everyone else seem to be ahead of her and it becomes her mission to lose her virginity no matter what. But the more she starts to get involve with other guys, she realizes that she has a major crush on Jake, her best-friend's older brother. The more time they spend together, the closer they get. It wasn't always that way, but with Operation: Popping the Cherry in the way, it makes it harder for her to accept her feelings for Jake without hurting her best-friend in the process.

After a series of unfortunate events, Valentina realizes that it doesn't matter what other people think or do, it's what she does for herself that makes a difference. This was also the message that I got after finishing reading the book. It's important to not rush in to things that one is not ready for and to do things for ourselves rather than for what other people might think it's right. Overall, this coming-of-age story truly became one of my favorites that I will recommend everyone else to read it.
