Release Date: March 2nd 2018 by Waltham Publishing, LLC
Genres: New Adult, Romance, Suspense

After finding her boyfriend cheating, Kate decides she’s had it with men. So the next night at her catering job she pretends not to be interested when Gavin, a hot guy with a great smile who attends the very exclusive Moorhurst College, asks her out. Unable to resist his charm, she agrees to have dinner with him.

On their first date, Kate’s convinced Gavin’s too good to be true. Funny, sweet, smart, and easy to talk to, he’s nothing like the losers she’s dated in the past. But maybe her luck has changed. Maybe Gavin’s the guy she’s been waiting for.

As their relationship grows, Gavin proves he really is the guy Kate’s always wanted but didn’t think existed. She’s even thinking about a future with him. But those plans come to an abrupt halt when Kate sees something she shouldn’t. Something dark and disturbing. Something that could get her killed if she ever told anyone.

Kate’s desperate to tell Gavin her secret but can’t. Even if she did, he’d never believe her. Still, she can’t keep something this big from Gavin, especially when he’s involved in it. Will she risk her life and tell him the truth? Or risk their relationship and keep this secret from the man she loves?

Suddenly, unexpectedly, I burst out crying, tears flowing like a dam broke loose. I set my phone on the lounger and cover my face with my hands, sobbing.

Last night, and all of today, I was able to hold back the tears, but now they’re breaking free, pouring down my cheeks, dripping onto my black apron.

If Carol catches me, I’ll be in so much trouble. She’ll probably fire me. But I can’t stop. The tears have started and show no signs of stopping.

“Hey,” a voice says from behind me. I turn and see a guy coming up next to me. He sits down on the other lounge chair, facing me. The chairs are close together so when he’s seated our legs are almost touching.

“Anything I can do to help?” he asks.

I shake my head, still crying, even more so now, because this guy, whoever he is, will probably go tell Carol I’m out here crying and then I’ll for sure be fired.

“Hey.” He puts his hand on mine. “It can’t be that bad, can it?” I glance up and see him looking at me. I must look like a mess. Nose red and swollen. Makeup running down my face.

Good thing it’s dark back here, although the lights around the pool are pretty bright. I’m sure he can see what a mess I am.

I can see him just fine. He’s hot. Thick dark hair that’s mussed up in a sexy, bed-head way. Deep set eyes that appear to be a shade of blue. Strong, square jaw, shadowed by a layer of stubble. And full lips that are now lifted into a smile, showing off a slight dimple in his cheek.

Of course I run into this guy now, when I’m a crying, sniffling mess. Not that he’d be interested in me, but still.

“I just need a minute.” I wipe my face and take a deep breath. “You can go inside.”

“And leave you out here crying? Sorry, but that’s not who I am. I see a girl crying, I have to at least try to help.” He’s wearing jeans and pulls something from his pocket. A cocktail napkin from the party. “Here.” He hands it to me. “It’s clean. I promise.”

I take it and dab my eyes, then unfold it enough to blow my nose. “Thanks.”

“You’re welcome.” He’s still staring at me. “So what’s your name?”

“Kate. Kate Norris.”

“You work for the catering company?”

I nod, sniffling. “Are you going to tell my boss I’m out here?”

“Why would I do that?”

“Because this isn’t where I’m supposed to be.”

“What do I care if you’re out here?”

“I don’t know. I just…I don’t know.”

He looks over at the house, then back at me. “You want to talk about it? About why you’re out here crying?”

I swallow and shake my head. “No.”

“Why not?”

“Because it’s stupid. And embarrassing.”

“Stupid and embarrassing are my specialities.” He leans back on his hands. “Go ahead. Try me.”

“I’d rather not.” I dab my eyes but my napkin is soaked.

“Here.” He pulls another one from his pocket and hands it to me.

I feel a smile forming. “Do you always carry napkins around?”

“Yeah. Why?”

He’s so serious, it makes me laugh. “It just seems kind of odd.”

“Is it?” He shrugs. “Guess some might think it’s stupid. Or embarrassing.” He smiles. “See? Like I said. Stupid and embarrassing. My specialities. So shoot. What’s making you cry?”

“I really don’t want to talk about it. I promised myself I wouldn’t.” I blot my face with the napkin.

“It has to do with a guy,” he says.

I look at him but don’t answer.

“Let me guess. Your boyfriend?”

I nod.

“You found him with some other girl?”

I nod again.

“How long did you date him?”

“Almost eight months.”

This time he’s the one who nods. “I’m guessing this happened recently? Him and this girl?”

“Yesterday. Our eight month anniversary.”

He cringes. “Ouch. You caught him on your anniversary? That’s tough. No wonder you’re crying. I can’t believe you showed up for work tonight.”

“I was hoping it’d take my mind off it. And it did, for a little while, but then…I guess I couldn’t hold it in any longer. This is the first time I’ve let myself cry about it.”

“Kate!” I hear Carol’s voice coming from the house. I’m definitely getting fired. She may be my mom’s friend but she’s also a businesswoman and she won’t stand for unprofessional behavior. And sitting out here, crying, is definitely unprofessional. “Kate, are you out here?”

I stand up. “Over here.”

The guy stands up too. I don’t even know his name.

I stay where I’m at as she comes over to us. I’d rather have her fire me out here than in front of the other staff.

The guy walks up to her, his hand extended. “Gavin Bishop. Nice to meet you.”

Bishop? As in the owners of this house? So he’s Niles’ son?

Oh, God, I am SO getting fired.

✯BOOK BLITZ:✯ One Night by Allie Everhart {EXCERPT + GIVEAWAY!}

One Night by Allie Everhart

Release Date: December 4th 2017
Genres: New Adult, Romance

I’m a true romantic. I believe in fairy tales, soulmates, and happily ever afters. The last way I’d ever try to find my true love is with a one night stand. But that night of the party, I wasn’t looking for my soulmate. I just wanted to do something wild and crazy. So I did.

When a hot guy with dark hair, brooding eyes, and a chiseled face made eye contact with me across a crowded room, I held his stare and waited for him to come over. Before even asking my name, he kissed me. I kissed him back. And then, without giving it a second thought, I followed him to a room and had my first ever one-night stand.

The next morning, I took off. It was only supposed to be one night. Nothing more. But I couldn’t stop thinking about him. Even months later, when I was dating someone else, I was still thinking about that mysterious stranger and the night we shared. Then I found out he’s not a stranger. He’s the friend of my roommate’s boyfriend and has been looking for me all summer.

I can’t let him find me. We were never supposed to see each other again. I’ll admit it was a magical night. One I’ll never forget. There were sparks, fireworks, and this unexplained feeling that we belong together. But soulmates aren’t found with a one-night stand. They’re found with handwritten love notes. Flowers. A first kiss under the moonlight.

A one night stand is the worst love story ever. But what if it’s mine?

I lean down and kiss her, and not a short goodbye kiss, but a real kiss. Slow and drawn out and expressing what I feel for her, which is more than I should feel for a girl after knowing her for such a short time and yet I still do. My feelings for Amber are more than I’ve felt for girls I’ve dated for months. But why? Why do I feel this way? Was it the sex? Did that one night mess with my head, making me think I love this girl after knowing her for just a few hours? That can’t be it. I’ve had sex plenty of times and never felt this way.

Someone’s car alarm goes off and I slowly back away.

“You weren’t supposed to do that,” Amber says in a soft, breathy voice.

“You said I could if we’re in public.”

“But I didn’t mean—”

“No changing the rules now. If we’re in public, I can kiss you. That’s what you said.”

“Fine, but it doesn’t matter because we’re not going out like this again. We’re going back to the letters. You said you’d try it so that’s we’re going to do. No texts. No emails. Just letters. You broke the rules today by coming here but we’re going to get this back on track.”

I just smile at her, then wrap my hand around hers and lead her inside the apartment building. We go up the elevator and when we’re at her door, I say, “I didn’t break the rules.”

“What are you talking about?”

“By showing up here, I didn’t break the rules of our arrangement.”

“Yes you did. You were supposed to just write letters.”

“And do romantic gestures. That’s what you said. And today was a romantic gesture. I showed up at your apartment unannounced. I surprised you. Surprises are romantic gestures.”

“Oh.” She looks perplexed. “Well, that’s not really what I meant.”

“You can’t define romantic gestures. They’re different for everyone. And to me, surprising you like this was a romantic gesture, as was buying you your favorite muffin.”

“Did you look up the definition of gesture? Because you seem to know a lot about them.”

“Not really. I’m kind of learning as I go. This is all new to me. I’ve never had all these dating rules before.”

“I know it seems strange but I warned you I was a little crazy when it comes to romance. And given the way we met, I just feel like we need to step back and start again. I don’t want us to just be about sex. I want more.”

“So do I.” I kiss her cheek. “I have to go. I’ll call you—I mean, I look forward to your next letter.”

She smiles. “I’ll put extra time into it.”

“I hope so,” I say, walking to the elevator, “because if it’s like the last one, I’ll fall asleep before I even finish reading it.”

The stunned look on her face is the last thing I see before stepping into the elevator. It’s fun giving her shit about that letter. She knows it was crap and I could tell she was embarrassed by it. I can’t wait to see what she writes me next to make up for it.

✯BOOK BLITZ:✯ Holding On by Allie Everhart {EXCERPT + GIVEAWAY!}

 Holding On by Allie Everhart

Release Date: August 28th 2017
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance

Up until that night, everything was perfect. I’d just finished my junior year, been named one of the best college football players in the country, and had a smokin’ hot girl on my lap in the back of my buddy’s SUV on our way to a party at the cabin.

Now I’m living in my own personal hell, reliving that night, my busted-up leg a constant reminder of what I’m trying to forget. Everyone in this damn town is holding their breath to see if I’ll play again, as if that even matters anymore. My future in the pros? The money? The media attention? I don’t give a shit about any of it anymore.

All I want is to be left alone, so I’m pissed when my mom goes and hires some damn cleaning lady for the house I’ve been renting. I’m expecting some old lady and that’s who I get until one day she doesn’t show up. Instead I get a girl with a beautiful face, soulful eyes, and a body I can’t stop looking at.

Her name is Becca and she’s hot as hell but the girl asks a lot of damn questions. Questions I don’t want to answer. But when she’s gone, I miss her like you wouldn’t believe. Sometimes I’ll make the house extra messy just so she’ll stay longer. It’s pathetic, I know, but this is what I’ve become.

I’m Ethan Baxter. And I’m barely holding on.

Becca

“Raincoat or umbrella?” Ethan asks.

“I don’t get the question.”

“When it rains, would you rather have a raincoat or an umbrella? Assuming you could only have one.”

“Raincoat,” I say, not even needing to think about it. “I like the feel of rain on my face. But being in soaking wet clothes isn’t fun. And even with an umbrella, your clothes still end up getting wet. So raincoat. Definitely. Which would you pick? Raincoat or umbrella?”

“Neither. I don’t mind if I get soaked in the rain, as long as I’m not wearing jeans. Wet jeans suck.”

“Totally. So you’re saying if you were wearing jeans, you’d pick the raincoat.”

“Correct. Okay, next question. Chocolate or fruity? Which type of cereal do you prefer?”

“Hmm. Depends on my mood. In the morning I tend to like fruity but if I’m having it later in the day, I like chocolate. How about you?”

“Fruity. Any time of day.” He takes a drink of his pop, then says, “Lights on or off?”

I feel my face heating up, but I smile and pretend his bold question doesn’t bother me. “That’s kind of personal, don’t you think?”

“Why is it personal? I was talking about what you like when you’re watching TV. Do you like it dark or would you rather have the lights on? What’d you think I meant?”

He’s such a liar. He definitely meant sex not TV, but I play along. “Lights on, but not too many. And not too bright.”

“Same here. Next question. Rough or gentle?” He says it with a straight face.

This time I don’t question what he means and just answer, “A mix of both.”

“That doesn’t really work. Most cars are either one or the other.”

“We’re talking about cars?”

He nods. “Specifically, what kind of ride you like. A rough ride, like a truck.” He says ‘rough’ in a sexy tone, his eyes on mine. “Or a smooth, gentle ride, like a luxury sedan.” Again, he says it flirtatiously.

I’m suddenly feeling very warm, imagining what it would be like to have sex with him. Would it be rough? Gentle? What would his body feel like? Those hard muscles. Those large hands.

“You sticking with your answer?” he asks.

I wake from my fantasy. “Um, yeah. A mix of both.”

He smiles, knowing his words got to me.

“Is it my turn?” I ask.

“Go ahead.”

“Top or bottom?”

As expected, my question doesn’t faze him. He’s very confident. I think it takes a lot to embarrass him.

“Are we talking bunkbeds?” he asks.

Damn, he’s good. A quick thinker.

“Yeah, bunkbeds,” I say. “Do you like the top or bottom bunk?”

“Both. Preferably, I like to try both in the course of a night.”

I swallow, my mind once again imagining the two of us together. We need to get off this naughty line of questioning before this night turns into more than just two friends hanging out. Not that I wouldn’t like more than that, but I shouldn’t go there. He’s my boss. And he’s Ethan Baxter, who admitted he’s not looking for a committed relationship. Then again, neither am I so maybe a quick fling wouldn’t be so bad.

Silas Sparks was my first love. My only love. The guy I thought I would marry, and almost did.

We were engaged. For a week. In high school. It was the happiest week of my life. But then reality hit and I broke off the engagement. I was only 17. I couldn't get married! I had plans for my life. Plans that included college and someday running a large corporation.

Silas was crushed. He couldn't understand why I did it. But that's Silas. He lives in the moment, never worries about the future. After we broke up, he took off for Europe and never came back.

That was two years ago. I haven't seen or talked to him since. Then just as I'm about to leave college for summer break, guess who shows up at my door? Looking even hotter than I remember, flashing that sexy smile of his, telling me he's home for the summer, living just a few houses down from mine.

Now I'm panicking. I was never supposed to see him again. Silas is the past. I've moved on. And yet here he is, and all I can think about is how much I want him back! It can never happen, but even so, I can't deny the truth. And the truth is...I still love Silas.

“Why were you flirting with her?” Willow asks. “You don’t live here. It’s not like you could date her.”

“I wasn’t flirting. I was just giving her my order.” I stretch my legs out under the table, letting them brush against Willow’s.

She crosses her legs and turns to me. “You were giving her the Silas smile. No girl can resist that and you know it. You were definitely flirting.”

“Why do you care?” I nudge her leg with mine and keep it there. I know I shouldn’t keep touching her but I can’t help it. I haven’t seen her forever and now that she’s here, I have this need to touch her, even in just an innocent way. I’m a very tactile person. Touch is a way I communicate, sometimes without even knowing it.

“I don’t care,” she says in a tone that implies the opposite. “Do what you want. I just don’t think you should flirt with some girl you have no intention of asking out. You’re leading her on.”

“A person can flirt without having it go anywhere.”

“Then what’s the purpose?”

Typical Willow logic at work. She has to have an answer to everything. An answer that makes sense to her.

“There doesn’t have to be a purpose.” I know that comment will get her going, but I put it out there anyway.

“Of course there does. You can’t just do something for no reason.”

“Fine.” I lean across the table and give her that Silas smile she was referring to. “I flirted with her so she’d get your order correct. I’m sure they’re not used to having to follow such specific guidelines for making a burger. I was just making sure they got it right.”

She sighs. “I appreciate your efforts but you don’t have to resort to selling your body just to get my order correct.”

I laugh and sit back. “I wasn’t selling my body. It was just a smile.”

“I think that girl would like more than that.” Willow holds up the receipt, which has a phone number written on back with the words ‘call me.’

“Huh. I wondered what she wrote on there.” I take the receipt and shove it in my pocket.

“You’re keeping it?” Willow looks disgusted with me.

I shrug. “You never know.”

“Never know what?”

Before I can answer, our food arrives, delivered by a short, scrawny kid who doesn’t look legally old enough to work. He’s probably the little brother of the girl at the register. They look similar.

“Wait.” Willow stops him before he leaves. “Could you get us another cup for the milkshake? And another straw?”

He nods and walks off.

I set the basket of fries between us as Willow inspects her burger, lifting the top of the bun.

“Is it the way you wanted it?” I ask.

“Yes. It’s perfect.” She puts the bun back in place. “But your flirting trick didn’t completely work. She forgot the cup and the straw.”

“That’s because you asked for that, not me.” I smile, then take a big bite of my burger.

“Whatever,” she mumbles, picking up a fry.

She eats fries one at a time, whereas I grab several and eat them all at once. That’s why we always shared an order. It would take Willow forever to finish a basket of fries on her own, eating them one at a time like that.

I wonder if she shares her fries when she goes out with other guys. I try not to think about that. Thinking about her with another guy makes me angry and I never get angry. Except when it comes to Willow. She brings out all my emotions. The good, the bad, the in-between. This girl gets to me the way no one else can.

When I left two years ago, I wasn’t sure I’d ever see her again, and now, working for her parents, I’ll see her every day.

This is going to be a very interesting summer.

Can’t Let You Go by Allie Everhart

Release Date: June 5th 2016 by Waltham Publishing, LLC
Series: Wheeler Brothers #3
Genres: New Adult, Romance

BRYCE

I never should’ve kissed her. It happened almost four years ago, the night of our high school graduation. I’ve always wanted to be more than friends with Jen, and after we kissed, I wanted her more than anything. But I can’t have her. I won’t let myself. She needs to get out of here. She needs to start a new life, far away from her old one. So I’ll keep pushing her away, even though it kills me to do so. When she finally leaves, it’ll destroy me, but at least she’ll be happy. And that’s all I care about.

JEN

Bryce is my best friend, and has been for as long as I can remember. If it weren’t for him, I’d probably be living on the streets, but instead I’m in college and about to graduate. I’ve been applying for jobs and might end up leaving Chicago, but I don’t want to leave Bryce. I love him, and I know he loves me. I could tell when he kissed me four years ago. But after that night, he refused to be anything more than my friend. Now time is running out. I might be moving away, ending any chance of Bryce and me ever being together. I know he wants to be with me, so why won’t he ask me to stay?

Purchase: Amazon, iBooks, B&N, Kobo

{EXCERPT}

Jen

I don’t think Chad’s the guy for you.” Bryce says ‘Chad’ like it’s the dumbest name he’s ever heard.

“Oh, really?” I say, crossing my arms. “Then who’s the right guy for me?”

There it is. Another chance for Bryce to say how he feels about me. Another chance for him to ask me out. But does he do it? Of course not.

He shakes his head. “I don’t know who the right guy is, but I know it’s not Chad.”

I sigh in frustration. “I have to go.” I get in my car. “I’ll see you later.” I pull on the door until he moves enough for me to close it.

“Hey.” He taps on the window as I start the engine.

I roll the window down. “What?”

“Are you going to dinner with him or not?”

Now I’m angry. Bryce always makes me like this. Loving him one minute, hating him the next. Well, it’s not hate, but it’s complete and utter annoyance and frustration.

“Not that it’s any of your business,” I say, “but yes, I am going to dinner with him. Goodbye, Bryce.” I roll my window up and pull out of my parking space and drive off. When I glance in the rearview mirror, I see Bryce still standing there, his head hung down, his hands wrapped around the back of his neck. He does that when he’s mad or frustrated. So he feels the same way as me. Good. We can both be miserable.

But why is that good? Why can’t we just be happy? Why can’t we be together like we want to be? And if we’re not going to be together, why aren’t we able to move on and be happy with other people?

Because we’re Jen and Bryce. That’s why. We’re best friends and we love each other and we’re meant to be together. But for some stupid reason we can’t.

And that stupid reason is Bryce.

Jake

I go to the kitchen and grab some glasses. “What can I get you to drink?”

Ivy walks over and meets me by the sink. “I’ll just have some water.” She takes the glass from me, and when she turns on the water, the sprayer comes loose and shoots water all over both of us.

“Shit!” She laughs as I grab the sprayer and shut off the faucet. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to do that.”

My shirt is soaked and so is hers.

“You sure about that?” I lean back against the counter, folding my arms over my chest.

“What do you mean?”

“I think you did it on purpose.” I smile.

She puts her hands on her hips. “And why would I do that?”

“So you could parade around my apartment topless and make me take my shirt off.”

She laughs. “Yeah. That was my master plan.” She rolls her eyes. “Do you have a dryer in this place?”

“No. I go to the laundromat. The machines downstairs never work, and when they do work, they’re always full.”

“You got a t-shirt I could wear?”

“You sure you need one? It’s hot in here. You might want to go with the topless option.”

She smiles. “T-shirt please.”

“Follow me.” I take her down to my bedroom and over to the closet. “There’s some in here and some in the dresser. Take your pick.”

She picks out a light blue one that I’ve had for a while. The cotton is worn and really soft, which is why I still have it.

“Can you turn around while I change?” she asks.

“Why?” I unbutton her shirt, kissing her as I do. “I already saw you topless.”

“We shouldn’t do this in here,” she says looking back at the bed.

“You’re probably right.” I lead her into the hall and continue undressing her.

She laughs. “This isn’t much better. We’re right next to the bedroom.” She pushes me away. “Just let me do it. You work on your own shirt.”

I smile at her as I unbutton it. “You could’ve just asked me to take it off instead of soaking me with water.”

“It was an accident,” she insists. “I swear.”

“Uh-huh.” I give her a smug grin as I take off my shirt because her eyes are now glued to my chest. I love it when she looks at me like that. With lust, desire. When other girls look at me that way, it does nothing to me. But when Ivy does, it arouses me, makes me want to please her, and put that blissful smile on her face that appeared after what I did to her on the couch.

As I go back in my bedroom, she says, “Are you putting on another shirt?”

“Yeah,” I call back. “Why?”

“No reason.”

“Did you not want me to?” I come back out to the hall and see her wearing my t-shirt. It’s huge on her but I like seeing her in it.

She eyes my chest. “I just…well, you were saying it was hot in here so I thought maybe you wouldn’t want one.”

I chuckle. “Then I’ll leave it off.”

Release Date: January 2nd 2016
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance

After losing her parents and brother in a car crash, Callie dropped out of college and went to live in the small town where her family used to spend the summers. A year later, and struggling to move on, she keeps to herself and wants to be left alone. So she’s not too happy when her new neighbor keeps knocking on her door.

Nash Wheeler, a 25-year-old construction worker from Chicago, inherited the house next to Callie’s and is living there while he renovates it. Outgoing, confident, and never one to back down from a challenge, Nash sets out to get to know his new neighbor, inviting her over for dinner and offering to fix things around her house.

As much as his persistence annoys her, Callie finds herself attracted to the tall, muscular guy next door. And the more time she spends with him, the more she realizes how much they have in common. Like Callie, Nash has experienced loss, but when he opens up to her about it, she’s not willing to do the same. It’s too personal.

Nash is just her neighbor. Just some guy living there for the summer. But is that really all he is? Or is he the one person who can finally help her move on?

Nash

“You’re holding my hand,” she says, her lips creeping up.

“I am,” I say, matter-of-factly.

Her eyes return to mine. “Why are you holding my hand?”

“You have nice hands.” I rub the top of it with my thumb.

“That’s why you’re holding it? Because I have nice hands?”

“You got a problem with that?”

“I guess it’s okay. Although your hands aren’t the greatest.” She tries to hide her smile.

“You’re making fun of my hands?” I hold up the other one that’s not connected with hers. “I do construction for a living. I work with my hands. I’m surprised they look as good as they do.”

She takes the hand I was holding up and inspects my nails. “You need a manicure.” She tries to be serious, but then laughs.

“I’m not getting a freaking manicure. I’m not one of those metrosexual guys or whatever the hell they call them. The guys who walk around with purses? You see them downtown Chicago.”

“There’s nothing wrong with those guys.” She sits back but keeps her hand in mine. “And by the way, it’s not a purse. It’s called a man bag. Or a murse. And a lot of guys get manicures. They’re not just for women. It even has the word ‘man’ in it. And cure.” She pauses, then smiles. “It’s a cure for manly hands. Get it?” She laughs at her own joke.

I scoot my chair over and lean in close to her face. Her smile drops, her breath quickens, and her eyes fix on mine. She thinks I’m going to kiss her, but I’m not.

Instead I say, “I don’t want a man bag. Or a murse. Or a manicure.” I look directly in her eyes. “I’m a man’s man. I like red meat. Football. A cold beer. Hard liquor. Pounding nails into walls. And women who challenge me.”

She’s looking at me with lust in her eyes, and God, I feel it too. The intense need to rip off her clothes and do her right here on this table. How the hell did this happen? How did we go from having a conversation to wanting to have sex? I’m not even trying to date this girl, and I definitely wasn’t planning to have sex with her.

I’m here to do a job. Fix the house. That’s it. Plain and simple. But suddenly it feels more complicated than that.

Rachel's POV

I pop up from my chair and go around the desk. “Welcome to the museum.”

He smiles. “Thank you. You weren’t kidding. It’s very small.”

“It’s good to see you again.” I hug him but he just stands there, rigid, his arms at his side. Oh, God, this is awkward. Why did I hug him? Shelby’s right. I need to get control of the hugging thing.

I release him and step back, my cheeks heating up. “Sorry. I kind of have a hugging problem.”

He’s still smiling. “It’s not a problem. It’s fine. I just wasn’t expecting it. I’m not used to people hugging me.”

“You’re not?”

“No. I honestly can’t remember the last time someone hugged me. Childhood, maybe?”

“Are you serious?” He doesn’t answer so I say, “Well, that’s just wrong. Of course, this is coming from someone who hugs everyone. Even the mailman. Even people I don’t know. Anyway, I’m sorry if I made you uncomfortable.”

“You didn’t make me uncomfortable.” He motions me toward him. “Come here. Let’s do it right this time.”

I step forward and hug him again. This time, he hugs me back. For someone who doesn’t hug much, he’s pretty good.

When he lets go, I say, “Next time, maybe do it a little tighter.”

He laughs. “Did you just critique my hug?”

“No, I’m just making a suggestion. It’s strictly personal preference. I tend to like a tight hug.”

“The few hugs I’ve had have been very distant hugs, limited to the upper body only. So to me, that was a tight hug.”

“Okay, well, ready to start the tour?” I walk over to the first display.

“Get back over here.”

I look at him confused. “Why?”

“Because I don’t like not being good at things. I need to do the hug again.”

I’m trying not to laugh because this is really funny. He’s taking this so seriously. But it’s fine with me. I’ll take another hug. I like being in his arms.

I hug him again and this time he hugs me tighter. It’s almost perfect, but then he lets go.

“How was that?” he asks.

“It was good.” I take his hand and lead him over to the display case. “But next time, don’t let go so soon. Let me, or whatever girl you’re hugging, let go first, and then you can let go.”

“I wasn’t aware there were so many rules to hugging.” He leans down and talks in my ear. “And just so we’re clear, the only woman I’ll be hugging is you.”
