False Start Fairy Tale by Kelly St-Laurent
Release Date: June 9th 2020
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance
AdΓ¨le Villeneuve is attempting the impossible. At twenty-four she’s opened an events company in her small French village, which at last count has a population of 1501. Even her parents tried to stop her. But AdΓ¨le has a plan. Or, at least she did.
Then the Reniers returned to town.
Aside from the dilapidated chateau that’s sat in ruin for the past forty years, Saint-Germain is known for one other thing: a bitter feud between the Reniers and the Villeneuves that has gone on for so long no one remembers how it started. It’s practically folklore, a hatred so deep it ended with the Reniers leaving France back in the eighties, never to be seen or heard from again.
Until now.
With the feud reignited, AdΓ¨le’s quiet life is upended. Even more so when she finds out that the Reniers are not only refurbishing the chateau but also opening a competing events company. When Finn Renier, the alluring son of her father’s enemy, offers her a truce that could save her business, she makes a decision that goes against her family, a choice that changes everything.
As she finds herself falling for the one person she’s not supposed to, secrets and lies become entangled, a dangerous truth threatening to be revealed.
Because Finn isn’t all that he seems.
And the Reniers didn’t just return to Saint-Germain for a fresh start.
{EXCERPT}
We walk around the corner to a spot where no one can see us, and I realize we’re in the same place we were when we met. How quickly things have changed since then.
“What do you want, Finn?”
“I owe you an apology. I’m sorry, what happened was my fault.”
“Sure thing.” She goes to leave, and I know I should let her, but I can’t. I reach out and touch her arm. “Don’t,” she says, her voice cold. She looks around, worried that we’ve been seen. “Do not touch me.”
“Okay,” I say, lifting my hands. “I just wanted to see if you were okay.”
She laughs harshly. “I told you we shouldn’t be around each other. You were the one who pushed it. You, not me. All those comments you made, and then that charade at the event on Friday. And it was you who kissed me.”
Even whispering her anger is clear. But everything she said is true. “You’re right. I shouldn’t have done that.”
“I’m sure you can get any girl you want,” she says bitterly. “But that doesn’t mean you get to treat people like they’re nothing. It was a shitty thing to do, and playing games like that makes you an asshole.”
I hate the way she’s looking at me even though I deserve it. “Trust me, it’s better this way. You don’t want to be with me.”
“Yeah, well that was reciprocated loud and clear.”
That’s what she thinks? A kick to the balls would be less painful than knowing I’ve made her feel that way. But how the hell can I explain it without telling her everything? “It wasn’t a game, AdΓ¨le. And believe me when I say I have wanted to kiss you from the second I saw you standing here.”
She stares at me, unblinking.
“And I didn’t stop the kiss because I didn’t want you.” God, that I could show her I mean it. “I stopped it because you deserve better than me.”
“What do you mean?”
I take the risk and move closer. “I’ll never lie to you. But there are things...” I cut myself off before saying too much. “Trust me on this, I’m not good for you.”
“I don’t understand,” she says, her mouth so close I can almost taste her.
In another world, I’d take her in my arms and kiss her in front of everyone, consequences be damned. But I don’t have the luxury. It’s not the feud I’m protecting her from. It’s me.
“Finn?” She waits for clarity I can’t offer.
“I’m sorry.” I turn and walk back into the shop, every step I take away from her feeling wrong.
